The high-pincount high-memory-density PIC18F87J10 Flash microcontroller family boosts performance in low-voltage applications by delivering up to 10MIPS at 3V.

Microchip has released the first ten members of its high-pincount high-memory-density PIC18F87J10 Flash microcontroller family, which double the performance in low-voltage applications by delivering up to 10MIPS at 3V As performance levels among 8, 16 and 32bit microcontrollers continue to blur and designs migrate to lower voltages, engineers are looking for cost-effective, peripheral-rich 8bit microcontrollers with high memory densities and pincounts that help them preserve their legacy 8bit code and development-tool investments

The PIC18F87J10 family address this by providing linear access to up to 128Kbyte of onboard Flash memory, while remaining code and tool compatible with all PIC18F microcontrollers.

In addition, the new PIC18F87J10 microcontrollers include nanoWatt Technology for optimal power management, along with two synchronous serial ports (for SPI or I2C) and two asynchronous serial ports (LIN-capable USARTs).

Other key features of the family include: 32 to 128Kbyte of Flash program memory; up to 4Kbyte of data RAM; two enhanced USART modules for RS232, RS485 and LIN serial interfaces; two master synchronous serial port modules, each supporting master I2C or SPI interfaces; five timer/counters (three 16bit, two 8bit); 15-channel, 10bit analogue-to-digital convertor with auto-acquisition timing two analogue comparators; three enhanced capture/compare/PWM modules (with support for H-bridge motor drives); two standard capture/compare/PWM modules; extended watchdog timer with prescaler options; brownout reset; and external memory access up to 2Mbyte.

The new PIC18F87J10 microcontrollers are supported by Microchip's world-class development systems, including: MPLAB integrated development environment (IDE), MPLAB Visual Device Initialiser, MPLAB C18 optimising C compiler, Application Maestro software, MPLAB ICD 2 in-circuit debugger and MPLAB PM3 universal device programmer.

The PICDEM HPC Explorer board (part DM183022), is also available for development with these high-pin-count large-memory microcontrollers.

All ten members of the PIC18F87J10 family are available now for limited sampling, and volume production is expected in June.
