Display controller aids graphics upgrades

A dedicated and compact display controller board from Arrow Electronics will significantly simplify the design and implementation of graphics LCD applications as well as providing a rapid upgrade path from character-based to graphic-based LCD solutions.

Arrow's LXGC1335 provides all of the circuitry, code and internal character sets needed to control and drive graphics, text and mixed graphics/text displays with sizes up to 640 x 256 pixels.

This leaves the designer free to concentrate on developing more application-specific hardware and software.

Operating from a single 5V supply and measuring just 81.0 x 41.0mm, the LXGC1335 PCB combines an Epson S1D13305 microcontroller (formerly known as the SED1335) with 32Kbyte of static RAM, an onboard DC/DC convertor, a negative voltage generator (to -24V), connections for a host microprocessor and the LCD interface.

The board also has a multiturn trimming potentiometer for LCD bias adjustment.

As well as the internal character set supplied, the controller board allows the user to define their own graphics characters, while the ability to address up to 64Kbyte of external display RAM ensures the rapid exchange of multiple pages of stored data.

The S1D13305 graphics controller IC generates all of the signals used by the display memory and LCD drivers and incorporates a character generator ROM as well as features for creating multiple layers of characters and graphics and the flashing and scrolling of definable windows.

Fully compatible with 6800 and 8080 microprocessor interfaces, the S1D13305 also ensures smooth resolution scrolling in both the horizontal and vertical directions.
