Anderson Power Products (APP) now offers its PowerMod connectors compatible with lead-free reflow soldering.

Anderson Power Products (APP) now offers its PowerMod connectors compatible with lead-free reflow soldering These high performance PowerMod connectors are certified RoHS compliant and are offered in 3 to 30 circuits with a maximum current of 30A

APP's unique PowerMod connectors are manufactured from high temperature plastic polyphenylene sulphide (PPS).

The 285C melt temperature of PPS makes it ideal for use in the lead-free, reflow solder process, which may have a peak reflow temperature of 260C.

Anderson Power Products certifies all PowerMod connectors are suitable for the lead-free reflow solder process per the temperature profiles specified by JEDEC J-STD-020C.

With the RoHS deadline rapidly approaching, PCB mounted connectors, used in devices for sale in the EU, will require compatibility with lead-free solder techniques.

Lead-free, tin soldering creates problems due to the higher solder temperatures required (particularly, reflow soldering), because the plastic connector is directly exposed to the peak reflow temperature.

Tin-lead eutectic solders have a peak reflow temperature of 225C, whereas polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), a plastic that is widely used in electronic connectors, has a melt temperature of 250C.

However, tin solders have a peak reflow temperature of 260C, eliminating PBT and other similar performing plastics from consideration for the lead-free reflow solder process.

APP's PowerMod connectors are available in straight PCB, right angle PCB, panel or cable mountings, offering maximum design flexibility for a variety of system packaging.
