External switch-mode supplies take linear market

An Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power product story

Artesyn Technologies has launched two new series of low-cost AC/DC external power supplies for applications that demand small, efficient outboard power sources.

Artesyn Technologies has launched two new series of low-cost AC/DC external power supplies for applications that demand small, efficient outboard power sources.

The SSL20C family of 20W power supplies and the SSL40C family of 40W power supplies employ latest-generation switch-mode technology to deliver unprecedented performance for products in this market sector.

These new Class II products have been developed specifically to provide reliable and cost-effective alternatives to the type of performance-limited linear units that characterise the low-cost external power supply market.

Primarily intended for use with cable modems and xDSL modems, the new SSL20C and SSL40C power supplies are also suitable for diverse applications in the datacomms, telecomms and computer peripheral markets - especially for powering external data storage devices.

All models in Artesyn's SSL20C and SSL40C series feature a universal input that accommodates any mains voltage in the range 90 to 264V AC - enabling them to be used virtually anywhere in the world.

Housed in a UL94V-0 rated plastic enclosure, the power supplies are exceptionally compact; they are just 27.4mm high, and have a footprint of only 11.8 x 6.1mm.

Efficient switch-mode conversion topology ensures cool operation and contributes to reliability - in fact, both series of power supplies have an MTBF of 150,000 hours, which is extremely high for products intended for the low-cost market sector.

The SSL20C provides up to 20W continuous power under normal convection cooling, and is available with a single DC output of 5, 12, 15, 18, 24 or 48V.

The 5V model is unusual in that it can deliver 4A continuously (very few low-voltage power adapters on the market can handle current levels of this magnitude), making it ideal for users seeking a reliable solution for power-hungry electronics.

The SSL40C has a continuous power rating of 40W, and is available with a single DC output of 12, 15, 18, 24V or 48V.

Artesyn's SSL20C and SSL40C power supplies are comprehensively protected against overvoltage and short-circuit conditions, and are approved to all relevant international safety standards for standalone equipment, including UL, CSA and VDE.

The SSL40C also has CB certificate of approval.

Both series of power supplies also meet the EN55022/11 and FCC Part 15 level B standards for radiated and conducted noise emissions, are CE-marked to show compliance with the EMC Directive and the Low Voltage Directive.

Pre-approved power supplies such as the SSL20C and SSL40C provide users with a significant competitive advantage, by allowing them to concentrate on obtaining approval for their own product without having to worry about power safety issues.

This can help them accelerate the introduction of products, which can be critical in markets with short windows of opportunity.

Pricing for 1000 piece quantities is $21.49 US for the SSL20C, and $23.35 US for the SSL40C.

The standard lead-time for both products is stock to 12 weeks.
