Artesyn Technologies has launched a new high efficiency dual-output DC/DC convertor module that employs synchronous rectification techniques and features an exceptionally wide trim range for each output The new EXB50 module is believed to be one of the first half-brick, dual-output products on the market to employ this latest-generation power conversion technology, and Artesyn has applied for patents on the circuit design

The EXB50 has a power output rating of 50W continuous and provides two independent positive outputs; these are nominally set to +3.3 or +5V prior to shipment to suit customers' requirements, but each output can be trimmed from 1.5 to 5.2V.

This ultrawide trim range gives system designers unprecedented flexibility in power resource allocation, and should often enable them to use a single module where they would previously have been forced to use two.

It also means that the convertor provides a very cost-effective solution for accommodating the general trend in the electronics industry of using lower-voltage silicon devices.

The EXB50 can deliver up to 7.5A from either output, and up to 10A in total, at temperatures of up to 70C under natural convection.

With some forced air and/or reduced ambient temperatures, the EXB50 can deliver up to 7.5A from either output, and up to 15A in total.

It features a wide input voltage range of 36 to 75V DC, making it particularly suitable for use in systems employing a 48V distributed power architecture.

The convertor is primarily intended for the networking, telecomms and wireless markets, where small size, lower output voltages with higher currents, low profile and high efficiency are all key demands.

Typical applications include high-end routers and switches, optical networking products, transmission systems and wireless basestations.

EXB50 series dual-output convertors are packaged as open-frame units with an industry-standard half-brick footprint of 61 x 58mm (2.4 x 2.28in), and are constructed entirely from SMT components - including planar magnetics - which help keep the height down to just 15.4mm (0.393in).

The convertors are designed for pin-through-hole mounting and have the same pin-out and footprint as a number of leading half-brick products on the market, making them an ideal choice for customers looking for a primary source for design-in or seeking a second source option.

However, their very high conversion efficiency enables them to deliver more usable power without requiring heatsinks, which simplifies thermal management, reduces physical space requirements, and provides users with significant advantages in terms of lower materials and assembly costs.

The EXB50 has a typical efficiency of 89%, and offers a wide operational temperature range of -40 to +100C ambient (-40 to +70C under natural convection cooling), with derating.

The convertor's open frame construction means that there are no thermally conductive potting compounds between power dissipating components and heat-sensitive control circuits, which contributes to regulation stability and ensures high reliability.

The EXB50 offers a remote on/off facility, which allows for logic control of convertor and sequencing of outputs.

The convertor has no minimum load requirement, and is comprehensively protected against overvoltage, overtemperature and short-circuit conditions.

The latching overvoltage protection circuits track the outputs by 125%, even if they have been trimmed right down to their lowest level of 1.5V.

Artesyn's EXB50 series dual-output DC/DC convertors have a 1500V DC isolation rating and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL1950.
