New point-of-load convertors offer a third more power, without any change to form-factor or footprint.

New point-of-load convertors offer a third more power, without any change to form-factor or footprint Providing a single output that may be adjusted for virtually every low-voltage silicon in use today, at currents of up to 20 or 40A, Artesyn C-class nonisolated DC/DC convertors are optimised for cost-critical applications through open-frame, single-board construction

Priced from as low as US $0.32 per amp, the new components provide OEMs with valuable support for creating attractive products for cost-sensitive markets such as computers and peripherals.

Flexibility of use is further aided by a choice of either 12 or 5V input voltages, suiting the different intermediate DC bus voltages that tend to be used in application sectors such as computing and telecommunications.

Known as SIL20C and SIL40C, Artesyn's new 20 and 40A point-of-load (POL) convertors feature wide adjustable outputs of up to 0.9 to 5.0V, which are set to the required value by a single external resistor.

The options complement Artesyn's existing 6, 15 and 30A offering - providing developers with a broad selection of standard parts that allow the power supply to be matched closely to the load.

The components additionally extend the available output power from 150 to 200W, giving developers true flexibility to accommodate changes in power budget without re-designing PCBs.

Both convertors are intended for through-hole board mounting, and are offered in a choice of vertical or horizontal package orientations to simplify design-in.

Vertical models feature small-footprint, single-in-line connections, enabling developers to achieve very high component placement densities if headroom is available - as is typically the case with PCs and servers, and rack-mountable peripherals with 1U heights and greater.

The SIL20C is the smaller of the new POL convertors, and can handle output currents up to 20A.

The horizontal version measures just 1.2 x 1.1in, and has an above-board height of 0.47in; the vertical version has a footprint of only 1.2 x 0.40in, with an above-board height of 1.1in.

5V DC input models have typical conversion efficiencies of 87%, and provide an output that is trimmable from 0.9 to 3.3V.

12V DC input models offer even higher efficiency - 91% - plus an exceptionally wide output trim range of 0.9 to 5.0V.

SIL40C convertors can handle output currents as high as 40A, using a dual-phase switching topology to minimise input and output ripple.

The horizontal version measures 2.4 x 1.25in, and has an above-board height of 0.47in; the vertical version has a footprint of only 2.4 x 0.5in, with an above-board height of 1.25in.

The convertors offer typical full load efficiencies of 91%.

The wide output ranges mean that both SIL20C and SIL40C support the common low-voltage silicon levels of 3.3, 2.5 and 1.8V, as well as the increasingly popular 1.5 and 1.2V - and even termination voltages of 1.25V or lower.

This gives developers a versatile power management solution that greatly simplifies design evolution, supporting changes forced by the migration of silicon voltage levels.

All SIL20C and SIL40C Series POL convertors offer a remote on/off facility, trim, and a power-good output signal.

The convertors have no minimum load requirement, and incorporate overtemperature protection as standard.

They feature input undervoltage lockout, and are fully protected against overcurrent and short-circuit conditions.

In addition, SIL40C supports current sharing between parallel modules.

Open-frame construction helps thermal management, and Artesyn's SIL20C and SIL40C Series POL convertors have an operational temperature range of 0 to +50C ambient (up to +80C with derating), and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL/cUL60950.

Pricing for 10,000-piece quantities is US $8.00 for SIL20C and US $12.80 for SIL40C; sample quantities are available for immediate shipment, lead times for production volumes are from 6 to 8 weeks.
