Convertors storm to higher densities
The Typhoon family of DC/DC convertors is claimed to set new performance benchmarks for the industry.
Novel quarter bricks optimise dynamic performance
A novel power conversion topology has allowed Artesyn Technologies to produce DC/DC brick convertors providing a quantum leap in performance.
EDN's technical editors selected finalists from 13 product areas, nominating Artesyn's Typhoon family of eighth- and quarter-brick DC/DC convertors for the power supply category because of the high power density and performance standards they set.
Artesyn launched its first Typhoon products in February 2003, in the form of a single-output eighth-brick convertor capable of delivering 40A at 1.8V, and two dual-output quarter bricks offering 20A per channel.
These products set new performance benchmarks for the industry in terms of output current capability, efficiency, height and cost.
They were followed by further models offering different voltage and current combinations, including a quarter-brick offering a groundbreaking 100A output.
Despite offering these exceptional power densities, all Typhoon brick convertors have a very low profile of just 7.7mm and require no heatsink.
According to Todd Hendrix, VP of Worldwide Marketing for Artesyn: "We are extremely pleased that EDN has chosen to recognise our Typhoon eighth and quarter bricks.
These very high power density convertors are enjoying considerable success in the marketplace, driven principally by designers' desires to replace large bricks with smaller form factor products of equivalent - or better - performance".
"We always get an outstanding set of entries to our innovation programme", said EDN Editor-in-Chief Maury Wright.
"The chosen finalists should be proud of their selection because many worthy products barely missed the cut.
I look forward to meeting with all the participants at the awards banquet".
In the next few weeks, EDN's worldwide audience of electronics engineers and engineering managers will use an online ballot to select the ultimate winners from among these finalists.
EDN's editorial staff and the EDN Editorial Advisory Board also take part in determining the final winners.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 29th March 2004 at the W hotel in San Francisco.
