Eighth-brick convertors handle
quarter-brick power
Two new 5V single-output eighth-brick DC/DC convertors boast industry-leading conversion efficiencies of 92%.
Two new 5V single-output eighth-brick DC/DC convertors boast industry-leading conversion efficiencies of 92% Forming the latest additions to Artesyn's renowned Typhoon family of high performance board-mounted power conversion products, the new convertors are available with current ratings of 10 and 15A now, and 20A in the near future, enabling designers to choose the most cost-effective model for their particular application

They are the ideal power solution for today's tightly packed boards - designers can now replace a standard 5V quarter-brick with a lower cost, higher performance eighth-brick module, and gain a 38% saving in board real estate.
Both of these new eighth-brick convertors feature a wide input voltage range of 36 to 75V DC and generate a single 5V isolated output, adjustable over the range 4 to 5.5V via a single external resistor.
Design-in flexibility is further enhanced by the fact that the convertors have no minimum load requirement, and provide a true monotonic startup characteristic under both normal and prebiased load conditions.

Comprehensive catalogue features wide range of new AC/DC and DC/DC products.
The convertors feature remote sense and remote on/off facilities as standard, and have a typical startup time of 10ms when driving a resistive load.
Synchronous rectification and advanced processor control of both primary- and secondary-side circuitry maximise efficiency and transient response.
The 15A model, for example, has a very high power density - in excess of 120W/in3 - and its output voltage deviates by just 92mV for a 1A/us step change in load current and will totally recover in less than 20us.
As with all Typhoon family eighth-brick convertors, the new 5V output models have an industry-standard 22.9 x 58.4mm footprint and are based on an open-frame, single-board package designed for through-hole mounting.
Extensive use of surface-mount components and planar, in-the-board transformer structures minimises device profile, allowing the installed height to be kept to just 7.6mm.
This exceptionally low figure makes the convertors especially suitable for applications using very tight interboard spacing, such as latest-generation telecomms switches and optical metro routers.
Artesyn's 5V eighth-brick convertors are designed for operation over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85C without a heatsink.
Their ultra-low-profile construction minimises airflow disruption and makes them suitable for both convection cooled and forced air environments.
The convertors feature undervoltage lockout, as well as nonlatching overvoltage protection, and are also protected against short-circuit and overtemperature conditions, with automatic recovery.
The convertors carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 VDE and UL/cUL60950.
According to Todd Hendrix, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for Artesyn: "Although eighth-brick convertors account for a small portion of brick usage today, they are now beginning to proliferate in new system designs".
"Our Typhoon family of high performance eighth-bricks, for example, are proving very popular in the communications sector".
"The ultra-low-profile high-power-density attributes of these convertors are considered key for high component density cards in tightly-stacked racks".
"The introduction of these new models means that we now offer more than a dozen different eighth-bricks covering voltages from 1.2 to 5V, giving designers considerable freedom to migrate from quarter-brick products".
Sample quantities of Artesyn's 5V eighth-brick convertors rated at 10 and 15A are available for immediate delivery, and the standard lead-time for quantity orders is stock to 12 weeks.
Pricing for 1000-piece quantities starts at US $49.50 for the 10A part, and $57.56 for the 15A version.
