Artesyn Technologies has extended its leadership Typhoon family of board mounted power with the addition of a new 200W series of quarter-brick DC/DC convertors Known as the ?ultra? series, which push single-board, quarter-brick performance to unprecedented levels, the new convertors provide single isolated outputs of 2.5, 3.3 and 5.0V, with continuous current ratings of 80, 60 and 40A, respectively

All three convertors provide exceptionally high efficiencies and power densities - the 5.0V model, for example, has a typical efficiency of 92% and achieves in excess of 12W/cm3.
The 200W ?ultra? series provides up to a 50% improvement in power capability over present competitor offerings.
The 200W convertors have an industry-standard quarter-brick footprint of 58.4 x 36.8mm and a height of just 7.6mm.

Comprehensive catalogue features wide range of new AC/DC and DC/DC products.
They provide an extremely cost-effective functional replacement for half-bricks, occupying 40% less board space and delivering much higher levels of output current and useable power.
The convertors are intended primarily for the networking, telecomms and wireless markets, in applications as diverse as core routers and switches, transmission systems and optical networking.
Their exceptionally high current, efficiency and power density attributes, combined with their very low profile, make them suitable for delivering the 200W power requirements of fully specified cards in AdvancedTCA applications.
The new ?ultra? series 200W quarter-bricks feature a wide telecomms-standard input voltage range of 36 to 75V DC and generate a single isolated output voltage, which can be trimmed from 80 to 110% of nominal using a single resistor.
Flexibility of design-in is further enhanced by the availability of two additional low-voltage models, offering a choice of 1.5V at 100A and 1.8V at 100A outputs, to address virtually all of today's low-voltage silicon supply needs.
The 200W quarter-bricks are the latest additions to Artesyn's rapidly expanding Typhoon family of high performance board-mounted DC/DC convertors.
They use the same patented conversion topology as all other Typhoon bricks, which combines advanced processor control of both primary- and secondary-side circuitry with precision synchronous rectification, and eliminates the need for optocouplers.
This topology helps maximise efficiency and bandwidth, resulting in excellent regulation and transient response characteristics.
Unlike intermediate bus convertors (IBCs) and DC/DC transformers, which only achieve high efficiencies and power levels by generating loosely regulated or unregulated outputs, Artesyn's new 200W quarter-bricks feature fully regulated outputs for driving low-voltage silicon loads directly.
All five convertors have a set-point accuracy of +/-1.5% and maintain line and load regulation to within +/-0.1% and +/-0.2%, respectively.
Typhoon 200W quarter-bricks are based on an open-frame, single-board package designed for through-hole mounting.
Primarily intended for use in forced air environments, they operate over a wide ambient temperature range of -40 to +85C and do not require a heatsink.
Surface-mount components and planar, in-the-board transformer structures are employed to minimise device profile, maximise reliability and facilitate automated assembly to help keep manufacturing costs as low as possible.
Additionally, the 60/80/100A devices have adopted the new high-current industry-standard pin-out option referred to as ?the double P?, or thermally enhanced double power pins.
It includes an additional set of power and ground pins for sharing the current flow, which addresses many board-level manufacturing issues that can arise when attempting to route more than 50A through a single plated through-hole or via.
The convertors offer differential remote sense and remote on/off facilities, and have a typical startup time of 10ms when driving a resistive load.
They also feature undervoltage lockout, as well as nonlatching overvoltage protection, and are comprehensively protected against short-circuit and overtemperature conditions, with automatic recovery.
The convertors carry a full set of international safety approvals, including UL/cUL60950 and EN60950-1 VDE.
They also meet the rigorous EN61000-4-6 EMC standard for conducted emissions and the telecomms-standard input transient rating of 100V for 100ms, which is beneficial in reducing customers' system qualification time and accelerating their time to market.
