POL convertors target cost-sensitive
applications
Eight new surface-mount versions join the C-class family of nonisolated point-of-load DC/DC convertors optimised for cost-sensitive applications such as workstations, servers and storage systems.
Artesyn Technologies has added eight surface-mount versions to its C-class family of nonisolated point-of-load (POL) DC/DC convertors optimised for cost-sensitive applications such as workstations, servers and storage systems Offering single programmable output voltages from 0.9 to 5.0V, the convertors are ideal for OEMs employing automated PCB assembly methods, and designing for compact size

Artesyn's new 70 Watt AC/DC power supplies offer greater design flexibility
Moreover, the range includes options delivering output currents to 40A, providing power densities that are believed to be unmatched in this market segment.
Known as the SMT C-class, these new low-cost DC/DC convertors employ an open-frame single-board construction to minimise cost, weight and thermal management issues, and use fixed-frequency switching technology to maximise conversion efficiency.
Each convertor features a wide-range adjustable output - enabling designers to accommodate various semiconductor supply voltages with the same unit - which is preset to the required value by a single external resistor.

New standard in efficiency from DC/DC Converters
Artesyn Technologies has introduced the EXB30 series of high-efficiency, single-output, open-frame, isolated DC/DC converters.
The SMT06C is the smallest of the new POL convertors, and can handle output currents up to 6A.
It measures just 30.5 x 13.5mm, and has an above-board profile of 11.8mm.
Developers can choose from two variants with nominal input voltages of either 5 or 12V DC.
The 5V input model has a typical conversion efficiency of 89% and provides an output that is trimmable from 0.9 to 3.3V.
The 12V input model offers even higher conversion efficiency - typically 91% - and an exceptionally wide output trim range, spanning 0.9 to 5.0V.
Artesyn's footprint-compatible SMT15C and SMT20C convertors handle output currents of up to 15 or 20A, respectively.
The modules incorporate a power stage heatsink, but are still extremely compact.
They have a 30.5 x 27.9mm footprint, and an above-board height of 11.6mm.
There are two variants available with nominal input voltages of 5 and 12V DC.
The 5V input models provide an output that is trimmable from 0.9 to 3.3V; the 15A version has a typical conversion efficiency of 89%, whereas the 20A version has a typical efficiency of 87%.
Both the 12V input models have a typical conversion efficiency of 91%, and an output trim range of 0.9 to 5.0V.
The footprint-compatible SMT30C and SMT40C convertors can handle output currents as high as 30 and 40A, respectively, using a dual phase switching topology to minimise input and output ripple.
Measuring 57.9 x 36.8mm, they have an above-board height of 10.8mm.
The convertors have a nominal input voltage of 12V, and offer an output that is trimmable from 0.9 to 5.0V.
The 30A convertor has a typical conversion efficiency of 91%, and the 40A model has a typical efficiency of 92%.
These very high current modules additionally feature remote sense capabilities, incorporate overtemperature protection, and allow current sharing between parallel modules.
All eight POL convertors in Artesyn's SMT C-class offer a remote on/off facility and a "power good" output signal.
The convertors have no minimum load requirement, and are capable of sinking as well as sourcing current, for termination applications.
They feature input undervoltage lockout, and are fully protected against overcurrent and short-circuit conditions.
All eight types have an operating temperature range of 0 to +80C ambient, and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL/cUL60950.
Pricing for 10,000-piece quantities starts at US $5.50 for the 6A part, with a standard lead time of stock to 6-8 weeks.
The new SMT introductions are electrically identical to the existing SIL C-class series of vertical and horizontal through-hole mounted products, and round-out Artesyn's range of general-purpose POL DC/DC modules to give developers optimised choices for all major applications.
Options include a choice of input voltages spanning telecomms and industrial/IT levels, programmable output voltages that meet all common low voltage semiconductor requirements - in a wide spread of current ratings - and through-hole or surface-mounted, in variants optimised for either lowest cost or highest performance.
