POL convertors boost current density
High-current-density point-of-load convertors promise dramatic savings in board real estate and external component costs.
Artesyn Technologies has launched five new high-current-density point-of-load (POL) convertors that provide dramatic savings in board real estate and external component costs All five convertors are RoHS-compliant members of Artesyn's C-class family of cost-optimised products, intended for general-purpose computer, storage and networking applications

POL convertors target cost-sensitive applications
Eight new surface-mount versions join the C-class family of nonisolated point-of-load DC/DC convertors optimised for cost-sensitive applications such as workstations, servers and storage systems.

High-efficiency, open-frame, DC/DC converters provide two independent, fully regulated, positive outputs
Three of the new convertors are the ultrasmall LDO-C series units, offering a choice of 3, 6 and 10A outputs, while the other two are members of Artesyn's SIL-C2 family, with 20 and 40A outputs.
All five convertors are the direct result of Artesyn's ongoing R and D programme in very high current density convertors - involving specialised component layout, thermal analysis and packaging techniques - and are available with a choice of vertical or horizontal through-hole mounting, and horizontal surface mounting.
The 3, 6 and 10A output LDO-C convertors accommodate an input range of 3.0 to 13.8V DC and have an output range of 0.59 to 5.1V DC.
The two higher power SIL-C2 convertors have an input range of 4.5 to 13.8V DC; the 20A model - known as the SIL20C2 - has an output range of 0.59 to 5.1V DC, and the 40A rated SIL40C2 has a 0.6 to 5.0V DC output range.
All five convertors provide a flexible and economical solution for powering silicon on densely packed boards, and are also ideal where height is restricted, such as in the latest 1U high rack-mounting equipment.
The convertors use a fixed frequency switching topology to maximise efficiency, minimise ripple and noise, and ensure a fast transient response.
They all employ an open-frame, single-board construction to simply thermal management, are primarily intended for use in forced air environments, and accommodate an ambient operating temperature range of 0 to +70C, with suitable derating.
The convertors are comprehensively protected against short-circuit and overvoltage conditions and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 (TUV Product Service) and UL/cUL60950.
Pricing for 1000-piece quantities is US $11.95 for the SIL20C2 and $18.90 for the SIL40C2.
In similar quantities, the LDO03C, LDO06C and LDO10C are priced at $4.95, $7.00 and $9.85, respectively.
Standard lead-time for all models is stock to 6-8 weeks.
