Processors combine to boost infrastructure power
A new dual-processor PowerPC PCI Mezzanine Card is aimed at telecomms infrastructure applications.
Mezzanine card lends Pentium power to telecomms
The hot-swappable KosaiPM gives telecomms OEMs an easy way to add processing power to AdvancedTCA or proprietary systems equipped with Advanced Mezzanine Card expansion bays.
OBSAI defines a high-level modular BTS architecture and provides detailed specifications for the internal interfaces among modules.
This open framework gives BTS designers easy access to interoperable, best-of-breed components from a wide range of vendors, thereby reducing the development time and cost associated with building new basestation product lines.
The open framework will also benefit network operators by reducing BTS cost and enabling them to bring new and advanced functions to market more quickly.
"Industry experts are forecasting explosive growth in the wireless infrastructure equipment market, in excess of 20% per year for WCDMA and CDMA2000 equipment alone", said Todd Wynia, Vice President of Marketing at Artesyn Communication Products.
"Meeting this demand will require extensive deployment of advanced basestation transceiver systems with scaleable, upgradeable wireless capabilities".
"Artesyn believes that OBSAI provides an excellent framework for helping telecom OEMs get to market fast with cost effective, next-generation BTS products, and we are actively exploring making our BTS products available in an OBSAI form factor".
Artesyn currently offers a family of intelligent WAN interface modules that have the features necessary to perform the transport function in a base transceiver station.
These modules, which combine an MPC8260 PowerQUICC II controller with up to eight E1/T1 spans, are packaged in a PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) form factor.
The transport module enables the base transceiver station to communicate with base station controllers and the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).
Artesyn's modules could be migrated to an OBSAI form factor as the market for open basestations develops.
