Avocent Corporation is demonstrating the Distributed Management Task Force's new Web Services for Management specification this week at the Microsoft Tech-Ed Forum in Barcelona.

Avocent Corporation is demonstrating the Distributed Management Task Force's (DMTF) new Web Services for Management (WS-Management) specification this week at the Microsoft Tech-Ed Forum in Barcelona The standard is being demonstrated in Avocent's next generation remote server Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) management module

The demonstration features Renesas hardware running on an AMD Opteron processor-based server platform featuring AMD's Open Platform Management Architecture (OPMA).

The WS-Management specification promotes interoperability between management applications and managed resources by identifying a core set of web service specifications and usage requirements.

WS-Management joins the Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) Command Line Protocol (CLP) specification as part of the DMTF's goal for lowering the operational costs associated with managing large networks.

When combined with IPMI, these specifications provide a standardised way to manage components inside the system, to provide a consistent command line for operational scripting and to establish a common programmatic interface that uses web services for use by management applications.

"Web services architecture is key for the future of infrastructure management".

"The investment Avocent continues to make in supporting open management standards matches the growing need for simplifying server operations by better utilising agentless management technologies like WS-Management", said Dave Perry, Executive Vice President of Avocent Corp.

"Avocent agentless management products provide opportunities for hardware vendors to complement their existing management products that already support IPMI with web services interfaces like WS-Management for easier access".

"AMD strongly promotes open management standards that help our customers reduce IT infrastructure costs by supporting system interoperability", said Margaret Lewis, Director, Commercial Solutions, AMD.

"By leveraging AMD's OPMA infrastructure to demonstrate support of WS-Management, Avocent is helping the industry understand the importance of interoperable reliability and manageability for server platforms".

"We believe the result will be lower TCO, enhanced flexibility and greater choice for our customers".

"We are pleased to supply a complete OPMA WS-Management reference design using the cost optimised H8S/216x BMC (baseboard management controller) device that Avocent chose to use in supporting their WS-Management demonstration of their next-generation agentless products", said Larry, Gagliani, Senior Market Development Manager at Renesas Technology.

"With Avocent's support for WS-Management using the Renesas OPMA M2 reference design, we continue to collectively simplify advanced server management for our OEM customers".
