The CANbus varistor (a zinc-oxide based ceramic semiconductor device with nonlinear voltage-current characteristics) handles peak currents of 4A (8 x 20us) and displays a failure rate of less than 0.1 per billion hours.
With a working voltage of 18V (DC) and 14V (AC), devices are available in 0603, 0405 and 0612 case sizes.
Maximum leakage current is 2uA and maximum capacitance (at 1MHz, 0.5V RMS) is 22pF.
The CANbus series, part of AVX's TransGuard line of transient voltage suppression devices, is suitable for high and low-speed communication bus structures, including LIN, CAN and J1850.
Devices are particularly useful to serve the growing need for ESD protection in the automotive industry: port protection of CAN network ICs, sensors and module protection, LCD screen protection and remote keyless entry systems on both the transmitter and the receiver.
