Winning the Wales Quality Award for the Manufacturing sector demonstrated how the company is thriving through its use of business excellence models from the Wales Quality Centre despite tough competition from low cost economies in China and India.
The EU Restriction of Hazardous Waste (RoHS) legislation, due to be introduced on 1st July this year, means that Axiom has had to modify and invest in new equipment to withstand the new processes needed to reach these new standards.
Solder will now be 99% tin instead of the current 36% tin and 74% lead.
The higher temperatures needed to work with the new solder formula means that existing machinery wears out quicker and new processes have to be developed.
With its experience of working to the new standard Axiom has already overcome these problems, being the first CEM worldwide to be accredited to the coveted BSI kitemark for lead free manufacture.
Even though the medical and defence equipment is exempt, many customers from these sectors of manufacturing are asking for their products to meet the same strict criteria in advance of the law changing.
These companies are planning for the future and can take advantage of the bank of knowledge Axiom has developed through working to the new standards.
