Axis wins AeroMobile contract
Axis Electronics has been awarded a contract to build a key system component for AeroMobile.
Axis Electronics, the specialist electronic manufacturing services company to the aerospace industry, is celebrating after being awarded the contract to build a key system component for AeroMobile, which allows aircraft passengers to safely use their mobile phones in flight.
Axis was chosen after an exhaustive selection process and has been awarded sole source manufacturing status for the AeroMobile cellphone radio frequency management unit (CRFMU).
The AeroMobile CRFMU ensures that passengers' phones do not interfere with ground-based cellular networks, and the overall AeroMobile system ensures that cellphones operate at minimum power levels thereby ensuring safe operation with respect to aircraft systems.
The main deciding factors for client Arinc in choosing Axis were the company's extensive experience of manufacturing the highest reliability products for avionics vehicles, and a highly commended quality assurance audit.
Phil Inness, Managing Director of Axis is delighted with the win: "Everyone at Axis is excited and proud to be involved in the production of such an innovative product".
"The implementation of AeroMobile will revolutionise the way we use our time when travelling".
Aeromobile will allow 1.5 billion potential travellers to use their own mobile phones and PDAs while on an aircraft.
Airlines will begin installing the AeroMobile system in mid-2006, and it is expected that the technology will be widely adopted by airlines and other aircraft operators in the near future.
AeroMobile is a joint venture between Arinc and Telenor ASA of Norway.
Axis will carry out design for manufacture, complex build, test and environmental screening of the product, and will work alongside Arinc's design partner TTP.
