Axis Electronics has signed an agreement which sees the outsourcing of the UK manufacturing of Curtiss Wright Embedded Computing to the Bedford headquarters of Axis Electronics.
This deal is the latest manifestation of an ongoing quest by UK high technology manufacturers to maximise resources and improve efficiency in order to regain their competitive edge in the international electronics market.
Manufacturing staff from Cambridge based Curtiss Wright will relocate to join the Axis team working with them to produce the highest technology computing solutions for defence and simulation applications.
The outsourcing deal also includes the transfer of the majority of the Curtiss Wright manufacturing equipment, strengthening Axis' capabilities in low volume and prototype manufacture.
Initial talks between the two companies progressed quickly and soon confirmed major benefits for Curtiss Wright in outsourcing to Axis its complete manufacturing operation and freeing up valuable resources to build on its core competencies of design and sales.
Curtiss Wright, whose roots date back to the Wright brothers' first flight in 1903, were keen to focus resources on the company's core activity of designing and marketing their ground-breaking range of embedded computing solutions.
Axis Electronics' reputation for reliability in building high technology products made them the perfect choice to take over its manufacturing capability.
The deal will generate an estimated GBP 2-3 million per annum for Axis, who will manage the entire supply chain for the Curtiss Wright range, including design for manufacture, material supply, product build and test.
Phil Inness, Managing Director, Axis Electronics, said: "We're all excited here to be working with Curtiss Wright on this project and thanks to the hard work and 'can do' attitude of all those involved, we've been able to transfer the manufacturing processes quickly and smoothly".
John Hunter, Managing Director of Curtiss Wright, said: "Axis has an excellent track record in our market for delivering on time and to the highest quality".
"With Axis handling the manufacture, significant resources can now be channeled into our core activities of designing and supporting world class products to meet our customers' needs".
