Geode-based SBC squeezes in for legacy
upgrades

A compact SBC which can be fitted into the space normally occupied by a 3.5in HDD has been designed to help systems engineers to easily upgrade their legacy 486-based systems.

A compact SBC which can be fitted into the space normally occupied by a 3.5in HDD has been designed to help systems engineers to easily upgrade their legacy 486-based systems The Advantech PCM-5825 features 256Kbyte Flash memory and an onboard, embedded NS Geode 586-class CPU, giving fanless processing at temperatures up to +60C

Key features of the PCM-5825 include an onboard VGA/LCD display controller, 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet and a CompactFlash card socket.

Four onboard COM ports that share a single IRQ are also provided.

Advantech has chosen to mount the 586-class CPU directly on the PCB.

This helps to ease the installation and configuration process during upgrades, as there is no need to set any jumpers for speed or voltage differences between the various CPUs.

The PCM-5825 has ISA-bus expansion capability.

This is provided by a 104-pin, 16bit, PC/104 connector that is mounted along one edge of the module.

Other connectors provide four serial and one parallel port, plus two USB ports and a single 115Kbit/s infra-red port.

Able to operate in environments with up to 90% relative humidity, the PCM-5825 has power requirements of +5V at 4A.
