A trio of low-power 3.2Gbit/s crosspoint switches include integrated input equalisation to optimise performance and simplify the system design process.

Mindspeed Technologies has developed a trio of low-power 3.2Gbit/s crosspoint switches that include integrated input equalisation to optimise performance and simplify the system design process Available across Europe exclusively through Azzurri Technology, the 68 x 68, 34 x 34 and 17 x 17 crosspoint switches are aimed at a wide variety of equipment including synchronous optical network (SONET) add/drop multiplexers, small storage area network (SAN) switches, dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, and protection switching

Mindspeed's new products include the M21130 68 x 68, the M21120 34 x 34 and the M21110 17 x 17 crosspoint switches, all of which are pin-compatible with the company's earlier products, and enable customers to upgrade to new devices with minimal, if any, additional engineering work.

These devices extend Mindspeed's broad line of field proven, high-performance crosspoint switches, while offering significantly better power efficiency than comparable alternative solutions - nearly a 40% advantage for Mindspeed's M21130 68 x 68 crosspoint switch to a four-fold advantage for the M21110 17 x 17 switch.

By including input equalisation, the devices enhance a system's tolerance for deterministic jitter, or the slight movements in a transmitted signal's time or phase that can cause errors or loss of synchronisation introduced by board traces and cables.

This allows a reduction in design time, cuts system verification costs, and eliminates the need for high-end board materials.

"Performance and reduced power are increasingly critical metrics in switching system designs", said Babak Nabili, director of marketing with Mindspeed.

"Our new crosspoint switches set a new standard for power efficiency and extend the benefits of integrated input equalisation all the way to 17 x 17 solutions.

They build on the foundation of our high-volume crosspoint switch expertise, and are key additions as we continue to build one of the industry's most comprehensive offerings of low-power, high-performance solutions".

The new devices include built-in system test capabilities including an onboard 2n-1 pseudorandom bit sequence transmitter and receiver.

Sophisticated power-management techniques reduce power consumption to as little as 1.75W in the 17 x 17 switch, 3.5W in the 34 x 34 switch, and 8W in the 68 x 68 switch, with all channels operational.

Mindspeed's proprietary PowerScaler power-management suite helps minimise power consumption during operation, and includes the company's SmartPower technology, a key feature that dynamically reduces power consumption based on the switch configuration.

All three devices support data rates from 0 to 3.2Gbit/s on each channel, allowing any combination of Sonet, fibre channel (1x, 2x, 10x), InfiniBand, Gigabit Ethernet and 10Gbit/s Ethernet traffic.

To improve the signal quality through jitter compensation, each input buffer is preceded by an input equaliser that removes inter-symbol interference (ISI) jitter.

This improves performance in applications where long PCB traces and cables are used.

The input equaliser can be enabled on a per-channel basis, allowing maximum flexibility.

Samples and evaluation units for Mindspeed's crosspoint switches are available immediately through Azzurri Technology, with volume production expected in Q2 2002.

All three devices are offered in a 35 x 35mm 580-pin cavity down ball grid array (CDBGA) packages.
