Custom keypads and enclosures on show
Custom enclosure specialist Bafbox is demonstrating the merits of a one-stop shop approach to custom designed enclosures and membrane keypads at the Manufacturing Technology Scotland Exhibition.
Custom Design Technologies has long experience in providing PCB design, prototyping of PCBs, fabrication of enclosures, manufacture of membrane keypads and production and assembly of all parts that are needed for a complete project to get to market.
Its wide ranging skills are ideal for producing systems used in access control, CCTV equipment, fire detection, identification systems, integrated systems, networked security, physical security products and retail security applications.
The company's capabilities are suitably illustrated by a new enclosure produced for an on-vehicle fire extinguisher system from one of motor sport's leading manufacturers of fire and safety systems.

New name at Nepcon
Custom DesignTechnologies will be a new name making an appearance at Nepcon 2002, but it won't be the first time that the company has exhibited at the show.
Custom Design Technologies produced a simple two-piece Bafbox plastic housing produced in ABS with a laminated coating to provide the carbon-fibre look and feel so beloved of the motorsport industry.
The plastic enclosure replaced a previous housing made from die-cast metal and offered a significant advantage in terms of weight, an important consideration in all motorsport applications.
Custom Design Technologies' box also offered savings on production costs as it was supplied predrilled and screen printed.
The original die-cast metal box had to be drilled, sent out for powder coating and then have labels applied.
The overall effect of the new Bafbox enclosure was a more professional look that was felt to be an important asset in the world of motorsport.
In addition, the new housing is far easier to assemble and makes the overall system more user friendly for maintenance such as changing batteries and so forth.
The new on-vehicle fire extinguisher system has proved so popular that it now features on a number of leading racing cars in Formula 3 and Formula 3000 and will also be carried in world rally championship winning manufacturers' vehicles in 2004.
Custom Design Technologies is also exhibiting products from its Custom Keypads Division, one of the UK's leading providers of membrane keypads servicing requirements for small batches from 50 to 100 pieces as well as high volume projects.
Custom Keypads can produce membrane panels incorporating the latest switching technologies and all keypads can have integral LED indicators with secret or hidden switches incorporated into them.
Switching technologies available encompass nontactile, Mylar dome and metal dome with embossing and frame embossing available as options.
Various coating options are available to suit individual environmental considerations.
Keypads can also be laser cut, reducing prototype tooling costs and lead times.
Also on show are examples of products manufactured by the Custom Assembly Division.
Set up to respond quickly to customer requests and comfortable with volumes from prototype quantities to full production runs into the thousands, Custom Assembly offers the same levels of customer service and quality for which Custom Design Technologies is renowned.
Many OEMs are now finding that shorter lifecycle products, along with increasing demands for flexibility from customers, mean that outsourcing production reduces operating costs, frees up capital and allows for greater flexibility.
It also enables OEMs to concentrate on the core activities of design, sales and marketing.
The range of services offered by Custom Assembly encompasses prototyping, inspection, assembly, test, calibration, PCB and cables and harnesses.
Custom Design Technologies is exhibiting on stand J140, Hall 6.
