Compliance testing for telecomms

A BABT product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Jan 19, 2004

At the forthcoming 3GSM show, BABT will underline its global supremacy in telecommunications test and certification.

At the forthcoming 3GSM show, BABT will underline its global supremacy in telecommunications test and certification, announcing innovative products and new strategic partnerships for total solutions which respond to the market's needs for fast-turnaround services meeting regulatory requirements and time-to-market objectives.

Dispelling end-user concerns about the integrity of mobile phones in relation to their SAR performance, the BABT SAR Mark provides universally recognised confirmation from the first name in telecommunications testing and certification that a product meets the relevant standards.

By appending the BABT SAR Mark, mobile manufacturers stand to gain credibility in their products' SAR rating, independently of retailers' knowledge and expertise.

BABT engineers will be on hand to discuss a raft of recent service improvements and partnerships, which have been concluded to expand its capability in telecommunications testing.

For example, the new PACE (Product Approval and Compliance Experts) service is designed to assist manufacturers to gain access for their products to markets worldwide, quickly and cost effectively.

It allows manufacturers to benefit from the services of a dedicated team of market access consultants.

The PACE team will review the product and intended markets in order to compile a simple, highly effective route through approval and compliance.

Its report details appropriate test standards, test plan, market entry requirements, spectrum management authority contact details (where appropriate), typical timescales for approval, and any additional publicly-available information necessary for gaining approval in target countries.

An updated, enhanced PQC (Production Quality Certification) scheme provides a low-cost alternative to ISO9001:2000 and typically requires just one audit day per year.

It meets the internal production control requirements of the EU R and TTE Directive (Annexes II, III and IV), the BABT CNC (Certified for Network Connection) scheme, and the BABT "tick" mark product safety certification scheme.

Approved manufacturers gain free use of the BABT-approved Octagon mark, for example enabling subcontractors to telecomms, radio and IT industries to win business through an internationally recognised QMS certification.

BABT has invested in the latest Anite GSM testing upgrade, reinforcing its position as a leading GCF and PTCRB approved facility.

This acquisition enables BABT to perform the full range of RF/protocol tests on cellular terminals covering GSM 1900, GSM 850, GSM 900/1800, GPRS and, soon, Edge/WCDMA bands.

The past year has seen the conclusion of BABT's negotiations with Sharp Telecommunications of Europe (STE), making the manufacturer's testing facilities available to BABT in order to extend its test portfolio and reduce manufacturers' time to market.

The agreement with STE, the UK based supplier of 2.5G GSM/GPRS phones, increases BABTs test resource through exclusive out-of-hours use of STE's testing laboratory.

This enables BABT not only to increase its available test capacity, but also to enhance its range of services with GSM 850 RF, GSM 850 protocol and Edge testing capability.

The agreement also confirms BABT as STE's compliance partner for all its testing/approval work in the UK.

BABT has recently announced contract wins including a new partnership with Cetecom.

The Malaga-based company has developed the MiNT (Mobile Communications Integrated Tester) to assist the acceleration of 3G service delivery by providing assurance to wireless operators that UMTS handsets operate as intended on their networks.

BABT will evaluate the platform, and achieve validated test case status with the GSM Certification Forum (GCF) and the PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB).

These will cover MiNT RF GSM/GPRS test cases, in accordance with GSMTS51.010-1, for all four bands (850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz), the MiNT RF UMTS test cases in accordance with WCDMA 34.121 chapters 5, 6 and 7, and the MiNT Protocol UMTS test cases in accordance with WCDMA 34.123 (which covers GCF Package Release Numbers 1-4).

Spirent Communications has partnered with BABT for validation of its U-ATS automatic test system.

U-ATS will help to accelerate the rollout of next-generation wireless services by thoroughly characterising UE RF performance in a lab setting.

BABT will evaluate the U-ATS system and WCDMA UE test cases that cover the complete 3GPP TS 34.121 specification, including the key Section 8 RRM (Radio Resource Management) tests.

The initial delivery of the U-ATS includes over 20 test cases for TS 34.121, encompassing WCDMA UE transmitter and receiver performance.
