GSM compliance services demonstated in Cannes

Underpinning a raft of new developments is the company's move to prestigious, purpose-built new facilities in Fareham, Hampshire, a few hundred yards from its present home.

The move to modern, state-of-the-art premises, which will be completed by February 2005, gives BABT the opportunity to improve accommodation for customers and provide an enhanced service.

Revising the layout of test platforms in a modern environment will streamline workflows, and allow BABT to establish more flexible scheduling processes delivering shorter lead times, quicker reporting and a faster throughput of jobs.

This significant investment will provide BABT with a solid platform from which to deliver the assurance and service that customers expect in a fast-paced global environment.

It also reinforces a 50-year tradition during which BABT's Notified Body Number, 0168, has become the global telecommunications industry's most respected affirmation of regulatory conformance.

Supporting BABT's pledge of improved services are investments in a variety of test facilities.

These include the Anite SAT 8 system, the new Agilent-based SAT protocol test platform, giving BABT access to four Anite SATs and three Anite RAMs in total.

The SAT 8 offers full quad-band protocol testing for all validated GPRS test cases, including the new GPRS batch 5 package.

With protocol Edge test cases batch 1, 2 and 3 and AMR test case batches 1 and 2, BABT can now provide a full suite of protocol tests for the North American market.

This new functionality adds to BABT's existing Racal-based Anite triband SAT, and to its quad-band RF capability using the Cetecom Mint platform.

3G capability is also now supported by four platforms, with the Cetecom Mint and Spirent U-ATS platforms available at the new Fareham facility, as well as the Rohde and Schwarz 8950GW and Orga IT3 platforms available at partner laboratories.

Through its work in establishing partnerships within the industry and validating test platforms, BABT has taken a leading position in the provision of GSM to 3G/WCDMA test services.

The move also allows BABT to expand its SAR testing facilities in response to increasing customer demand.

Investment in a second SAR test room and the addition of new personnel effectively doubles testing capacity and will ensure that customers' service demands are not only met but surpassed.

At the same time, BABT is equipping its Maplewood Facility in Basingstoke with a CTIA antenna test system with capability for performing full-cylinder scans of handsets as well as half-cylinder scans of micro and pico basestation antennas.

New products to be launched in Cannes include an RoHS-D (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, commonly referred to as the Lead-free Directive) total lifecycle solution, ranging from compliance consultancy through technical file opinions, training and PQC auditing.

BABT can also offer recompliance testing to demonstrate continuing compliance with EMC-D or RTTE-D, for example following a move to a lead-free solder.

BABT will use the show to update its position regarding agreements accelerating entry for products into the Chinese market.

And the company will confirm its position as a lynchpin in the global telecommunications community with a number of further announcements at the show with reference to: appointments covering BSMI testing for Taiwan and NEBS for the US market; certification services via the EU- Japan and EU-Canada MRAs; the new CB Scheme for EMC; and smartcard/chip and pin and wireless LAN test services.
