The multimode laser diode allows service providers to extend triple-play service delivery to fibre customers located further away from the central office or the cable head-end.
Modulator tunes lasers up to 40Gbit/s
Reduced size InP MZ platform will allow Bookham to offer 40Gbit/s products in smaller footprints compared with existing 40Gbit/s offerings employing larger optics.
The initial devices in the hot-pluggable MSA series are the IGF-32311 and IGF-17311 modules.
The IGF-32311 is a multi-protocol 1310nm XFP transceiver for use in Sonet/SDH, 10G Ethernet and 10G Fibre Channel applications; the IGF-17311 is a 1310nm XFP transceiver for use in 10G Ethernet applications and meets the 10GBase-LR specification.
Both products are now generally available and are being used by key customers, having been fully qualified in 2004.
"XFP modules provide the lowest cost of ownership for 10Gbit/s optical interfaces".
"The economics of our new devices are improved by the reduced inventory expense that results from pluggability and the ability to be configured at the customer site".
"Users simply plug in new channels as required", said Steve Joiner, Director of Marketing, Pluggable Transceivers at Bookham.
"System flexibility and configurability are additionally enhanced by adherence to the multi source agreement".
"Cost advantages aside, these communication markets place a premium on quality and reliability".
"That's why we believe the GR-468-Core reference is significant", added Joiner.
The first Bookham XFP SR modules are being supplemented by other family products, including the IGF-32511, an intermediate reach (40km) device that meets Sonet/SDH IR2 and Ethernet 10GBase-ER specifications; the IGF-32611 LR2 (80km) device; and the IGF-32312 extended temperature XFP SR multiprotocol transceiver.
A dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) XFP transceiver is also under development.
With the addition of this new product family to its portfolio of leading edge optical products, Bookham is reinforcing its commitment to the pluggables sector of the market and the major cost and configurability advantages that the technology delivers.
