This week, Bookham will unveil its advanced optical technology to the Chinese market The Bookham wideband tunable laser and DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) SFP transceiver modules will be demonstrated live at the Bookham facility in Shenzhen between 6th and 9th September 2005

The demonstration - the first of its kind by Bookham in China - is scheduled to coincide with CIOE, at which Bookham is presenting a paper on its strategy for providing low-cost, high-quality tunability.

"China is an increasingly important market for Bookham and forms a major part of the company's ongoing strategy", said Adrian Meldrum, Vice President Sales and Marketing at Bookham.

"The transfer of manufacturing to China is progressing extremely well and is in line with our original plans and schedule".

"Production lines for transferred products, including active, passive and amplifiers, have been fully qualified and volume ramps are in progress".

"More than US $12 million of goods were shipped direct from our Shenzhen facility last quarter and this will increase in the current quarter".

The Bookham product demonstration includes one of a family of transceiver products that are already widely deployed by both telecomms and datacomms system vendors worldwide.

The product leverages the company's success in short-reach (SR) and intermediate-reach (IR) XFP to expand into leading edge SFP and XFP DWDM applications.

The paper Bookham is presenting at CIOE provides details of the company's tunable laser strategy, high yield chip design and assembly processes at its Shenzhen facility.

It illustrates how the Bookham indium phosphide (InP) modulator platform has been adapted to enable full band tunability and operates seamlessly with the full band laser, giving industry leading 10Gbit/s performance in a minimal footprint module.

"The Shenzhen facility is central to the Bookham strategy for low cost tunability", added Meldrum.

"We believe that our high yield chip fabrication and technology, combined with the flexible cost-effective manufacturing in Shenzhen, will deliver a highly competitive cost structure and cost point in the industry".

"We are now ramping the production of tunable products directly out of Shenzhen and the excellent progress with the transfer so far has given us high confidence in this approach".

Bookham obtained the Shenzhen facility in March 2004 through its acquisition of New Focus and began transferring product lines in the summer of 2004.

Transmit and receive optical assemblies, erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs), mini gain block and metro amplifiers, and fibre and connector subassemblies have already been transferred and received customer approval.

Production lines for receivers, pumps, direct modulated lasers and InP Mach-Zehnder (MZ) lasers have been fully qualified and customer volume shipment started.

Bookham now employs over 700 people in Shenzhen, a figure expected to increase once all volume production of transmitters, receivers and line subsystems is complete at the end of 2005.
