The first paper will focus on the demonstration of equivalent performance in L band lasers to that previously reported for C band lasers.

Tunable transponder moves to smaller format
The 2.2 x 3in footprint enables network equipment manufacturers to increase port density, placing two SFF transponders on a card where only one LFF would fit.
Bar supports laser systems
The VHB bar has a power output of 80W (up to four times the brightness of a typical 10mm bar) and measures only 3.2mm in width.
A pair of laser modules is shown to give complete coverage of C and L band with power levels greater than 16.5dB (ex facet, greater than 13dBm ex module) and side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) greater than 45dB.
The second paper is a detailed analysis of the intrinsic noise associated with the DSDBR laser platform, showing that low levels of frequency modulation noise generated by the lasers, which give negligible effect on dispersion penalty even for very long haul systems using electronic dispersion mitigation.
The third paper presents design and packaging results on a compact butterfly 10Gbit/s transmitter, including the company's DSDBR laser and indium phosphide (InP) Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator, showing excellent power, reach and eye quality over the full C band.
"The result of our 10Gbit/s transmitter is a breakthrough performance in such a small package".
"We will be bringing this product to market early next year, and are now engaging with key customers", said Price.
"The packaging technology for this product is derived from our range of fixed wavelength InP transmitters, of which some 75,000 have already been manufactured".
"The very high performance of the new tunable component, coupled with its minimal butterfly footprint, will open the way to widespread cost-effective tunability in many metro and long-haul applications".
Bookham will be showing a range of tunable products on Stand 438 at ECOC, including its DS-DBR integrated tunable laser assembly (iTLA), wideband tunable compact Mach-Zehnder (MZ) and compact MZ.
