A terminal adapter router chip and a low cost IP phone chip can be used as stand-alone VoIP processors in consumer applications.

Broadcom Corporation has developed two new voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) devices for consumer applications The two new devices, a terminal adapter (TA) router chip and a low cost IP phone chip, can be used as stand-alone VoIP processors to enable leading OEMs and ODMs to create feature-rich and cost-effective TA routers or desktop IP phones for the home or small office

They can also be paired with market-leading Broadcom 54g Wi-Fi technology to create wireless versions of the same products.

The new devices expand Broadcom's existing IP phone product portfolio, which includes Wi-Fi phone and Wi-Fi video phone platforms, voice-enabled cable and DSL modems, and Ethernet IP phones, to make the Broadcom consumer VoIP offering second to none in the industry.

"Broadcom provides its customers with a one-stop-shop for high quality, low cost VoIP solutions for consumer applications", said Monika Gupta, Product Marketing Manager, Broadcom Consumer VoIP products.

"Our industry-leading IP phone, wireless LAN, cable modem, and DSL modem technologies, coupled with our field-proven VoIP software platform, put us in the unique position to offer a compelling suite of consumer VoIP solutions".

The BCM1111 is a highly integrated, high performance VoIP processor that is ideal for wired and wireless TA router applications.

TAs connect an analogue phone to a broadband modem to enable voice calls over the Internet.

The new Broadcom processor can scale to fit applications from low-end cordless phone TAs to high-end Wi-Fi router TAs.

For example, when coupled with Broadcom 54g and router chips, the BCM1111 enables a device that combines the functionality of three separate home networking devices into one.

Additionally, the BCM1111 has two integrated voice codecs, making it more cost-effective than competing solutions.

It leverages Broadcom's VoIP xChange software platform, a complete VoIP software package that is unique because it includes networking and router components.

Broadcom's new low cost consumer IP phone chip, the BCM1190, is a highly integrated high-performance VoIP processor that is targeted at residential and small office/home office (SOHO) Ethernet IP handsets.

The BCM1190 provides enterprise class IP phone features at consumer price points, such as high fidelity audio support and full duplex speakerphone, allowing service providers to deliver more differentiated services than existing analogue phone or TA solutions.

Both devices feature a single MIPS processor core with specialised VoIP instructions that eliminate the need for a separate digital signal processor for voice applications.

This reduces the sise and cost of the device, resulting in end products at price points that will further drive the adoption of consumer VoIP applications.

Both the BCM1111 TA router chip and the BCM1190 IP phone chip are available in sample quantities.

Production is expected in the second quarter of 2006.

Pricing is available on request.

To accelerate customer's time to market, Broadcom has developed the BCM91111 and BCM91190 reference designs, which include Broadcom's VoIP xChange software suite and board support package, including all necessary drivers and software development tools.

Both reference designs are available today.
