Video phone chipset incorporates Wi-Fi
Broadcom has developed the world's first Wi-Fi video phone chipset for wireless handsets and desktop video IP phones.
The Broadcom BCM2724 VideoCore processor performs multimedia processing that delivers crisp video images combined with the best power performance in the industry, while the Broadcom BCM2124 baseband processor provides GPRS and GSM connectivity to the cellular network.
Also featured within the BCM92724 mobile TV platform is the Broadcom BCM2045 single-chip Bluetooth solution.
Through pre-integrated software, handset makers can easily adapt the reference design into a full-featured multimedia phone product.
The reference design itself is very small and designed to accommodate the slim, compact form factors of today's popular handsets.
"Mobile entertainment holds great promise for the continued evolution of the mobile phone", said Dr Robert Swann, Senior Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Mobile Multimedia line of business.
"Our new mobile TV reference design platform combines leading-edge Broadcom mobile technologies that simplify the process of integrating mobile television into cellular handsets".
The new Broadcom BCM92724 reference design is a complete platform for simplifying mobile television integration into mobile handsets while significantly improving time to market.
It supports the terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) standard (a digital radio transmission system for sending multimedia to mobile devices) at the mobile television front-end.
Using Broadcom's mobile TV middleware, the current design can be easily adapted to other mobile broadcast standards, such as DVB-H, by substituting an appropriate front-end tuner/demodulator.
The BCM2724 VideoCore multimedia processor cost-effectively transforms a mobile phone into a multi-functional media device with the ability to display high quality video on handheld LCD screens.
The VideoCore processor also features MPEG-4 VGA or H.264 CIF video encoding/decoding at 30 frames per second and TV output.
Providing one of the most power-efficient, high performance multimedia processors in the industry, the BCM2724 enables a rich feature-set without significantly affecting battery life.
The BCM2124 GPRS/GSM baseband processor contains all of the analogue and digital GSM and multislot GPRS processing functions for connecting to a cellular network in a small, single-chip footprint that supports a range of mobile devices.
The BCM2045, with EDR technology, is the industry's most popular single-chip Bluetooth device for mobile handsets.
Mobile phones, notebook and desktop computers, PDAs and wireless peripherals equipped with the BCM2045 transceiver provide superior wireless multimedia capabilities, such as streaming audio and video.
Bluetooth is expected to be a key component of the mobile TV experience, allowing users to listen to accompanying audio on wireless stereo or mono headsets, or to potentially stream video to larger displays.
The BCM2045 is compliant with Version 2.0 of the Bluetooth specification and is upgradeable to Version 2.1, delivering the most exciting features while dramatically cutting power dissipation when compared with other solutions.
The BCM92724 includes CellAirity mobile handset software, a complete suite of cellular software and applications that includes advanced multimedia and messaging, web browsing, Java games, and rich connectivity options.
The Broadcom BCM92724 MobileTV reference design platform is available now to early access customers.
