The IEEE802.3at Task Force is developing specifications for increased wattage (over the 802.3af standard), and pre-IEEE802.3at solutions are now powering new generations of networked-attached devices, such as video phones, surveillance cameras, residential gateways/routers, retail point-of-sale readers and security card scanners, that require higher power to operate.
The widespread adoption of telephony and wireless technologies that rely on power over Ethernet has driven PoE port growth to about 50% per year beginning in 2005, according to Dell'Oro market research.
As outlined in the firm's 5-Year Ethernet Forecast Summary (published in January 2007): "PoE shipments will grow from 32 million ports in 2006 to 145 million ports in 2011, with annual growth rates of over 30%".
Dell'Oro anticipates that "IP phones will remain the big driver of PoE switch deployments, though devices such as enterprise-class wireless LAN access points, security cameras and badge scanners will also drive deployments".
"Power over Ethernet is a natural evolution for Broadcom given that we can utilise our successful physical layer device knowledge and expertise, while continuing to develop solutions that power other Broadcom products such as multimedia IP phones, next generation wireless access points, cable modems and DSL equipment", says Nariman Yousefi, a Vice President and General Manager in Broadcom's Enterprise Networking Group.
"PoE is also an additional component of Broadcom's strong and complete Ethernet platform of switches, PHYs, processors and solutions that enable our customers to rapidly develop fully tested products based on field proven Broadcom technologies".
The Broadcom BCM59101 and BCM59103 power over Ethernet PSE controllers feature the industry's highest integration and enhanced power per port compared with any competing PoE solution currently available.
The BCM59101 (IEEE802.3af-compliant) and the BCM59103 (pre-IEEE802.3at) controllers provide a highly integrated, single-chip design that results in 30% fewer components and easier PCB layout than any competing products.
The BCM59103 goes beyond the original IEEE802.3af specification to provide 37W per port, for higher powered wireless, video and security technologies.

Broadcom's new PoE product family includes the BCM59101 and the BCM59103 PSE controllers.
The BCM59101 is the industry's most highly integrated four-port IEEE802.3af-compliant PoE device, delivering 15.4W per port, and the BCM59103 is the industry's first and most highly integrated four-port pre-IEEE802.3at PoE device.
The BCM59101 and BCM59103 are pin compatible, enabling OEMs to adopt the BCM59101 as a cost effective, baseline 802.3af-compliant solution.
For applications that require higher power, the BCM59103 can be dropped into the BCM59101 footprint to provide 37W per port, expanding the applications for Ethernet switches by enhancing the wattage available for such high power applications as 802.11n wireless access points, video and security technologies.
Broadcom's new power over Ethernet controllers offer unique features that set them apart from the competition, including integrated power MOSFETs, a highly efficient DC/DC controller, AC disconnect and LED control circuitry.
Additionally, these PoE controllers eliminate the power-hungry sensing resistors previously required on each port, resulting in the industry's best thermal performance for the total PoE subsystem.
The integrated microcontroller unit (MCU) in both the BCM59101 and BCM59103 allows dynamic power management and addresses L2 classification and other timing control requirements.
The BCM59101 and BCM59103 are each manufactured in a robust, high voltage silicon process technology from Broadcom's technology partner AMI Semiconductor (AMIS), which provides customers in the automotive, medical, industrial, military/aerospace and communications markets with optimal high voltage process semiconductor solutions.
Broadcom's first offerings in the power over Ethernet market - the BCM59101 and BCM59103 PSE controllers - are now in production and available to customers.
