Buffalo Technology has a new addition to its extensive range of wireless networking products, a network interface card (NIC) in CompactFlash format The WLI-CF-S11G is a CompactFlash type wireless LAN card designed to support PDA and pocket PC computers such as the Compaq iPAQ, HP Jornada, Casio Cassiopeia, Toshiba e570, and any other systems with a Type II CompactFlash slot running WinCE or Pocket PC ver3.0 or later

It can also be used with a companion PCMCIA adapter, the WLI-CF-OP in portable and laptop computers.

Based on Intersil's latest PRISM technology, the WLI-CF-S11G conforms to the IEEE802.11b (wireless LAN standard protocol).

It operates with transmission speeds up to 11Mbit/s in the 2.4GHz band, with 11 channels, and is WiFi approved, ensuring it meets compatibility standards for interoperability with other wireless LAN products.

The WLI-CF-S11G communicates in half duplex using direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) techniques, and supports both infrastructure mode and ad hoc mode of operation.

In a networking environment it supports NetBEUI, TCP/IP and IPX/SPX protocols.

Security includes the provision of 128bit/40bit WEP modes as well as a hardware MAC address that can be used to restrict access.

An anti-theft hole provides a means of preventing unauthorised removal of the card.

Measuring only 43 x 58 x 5mm, the CompactFlash card weighs only 16g.

Its small antenna style makes it easy to use with either PDA or laptop adapter.

Keeping battery drain to a minimum, the WLI-CF-S11G takes only 660mW from the host computer power supply.
