Dual Xeon board tops CompactPCI charts

A Concurrent Technologies product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Jun 14, 2005

A dual Intel Xeon processor board is the newest and most powerful CompactPCI single board computer from Concurrent Technologies.

Concurrent Technologies announces its latest CompactPCI single board computer - a dual Intel Xeon processor board.

The PP 221/01x is positioned as Concurrent Technologies highest performance CompactPCI processor board and is designed as a form, fit and function continuation of the popular PP 220/01x family.

The PP 221/01x offers two low power CPU speed options using the Low Voltage Intel Xeon Processor, the 2.4GHz (533MHz FSB) works within a 40W thermal envelope and the 2.0GHz (400MHz FSB) works within a 35W thermal envelope.

Supporting up to 4Gbyte DDR ECC DRAM, the dual 2.4GHz processors can access memory at a peak bandwidth of 4.2Gbyte/s and the dual 2.0GHz processors can access memory at a peak bandwidth of 3.2Gbyte/s.

The PP 221/01x supports onboard Ultra-160 SCSI and UDMA100 EIDE disk interfaces and is ideally suited to intensive multitasking applications requiring scalability and high performance, such as web-serving, search engines, storage (NAS, SAN), traffic management, voice over IP, telecommunications servers, network management, security, and load balancing.

Both 2.4 and 2.0GHz processors feature 512Kbyte L2 cache, Intel NetBurst Microarchitecture and Hyper-Threading technology.

Hyper-Threading technology enables the PP 221/01x to function as four "virtual" processors by executing two threads in parallel on two processing cores therefore allowing the software to multitask more effectively.

Both processors connect to the high performance Serverworks Grand Champion LE System I/O chipset interfacing with up to 4Gbyte 200/266MHz DDR ECC SDRAM, Ultra-160 SCSI and dual Gigabit Ethernet interfaces (sharing a 66MHz PCIbus) plus a 64bit 66MHz PMC site and CompactPCI bridge (sharing a 66MHz PCIbus).

For increased reliability, as with all Concurrent Technologies' designs, passive heatsinks are used in preference to fans for cooling the two CPUs; the board can operate in environments ranging from 0 to +55C.

The PP 221/01x supports PICMG 2.16 (Ethernet on backplane), PICMG 2.9 (IPMI), PICMG 2.1 (hot swap), PICMG 2.0 (33/66MHz CompactPCI) and can operate as a system slot controller, peripheral slot controller or as a satellite board (disables CompactPCI interface) to use the PICMG 2.16 Ethernet only.

As well as the dual Gigabit Ethernet and Ultra-160 SCSI signalling interfaces to the J3 connector, the PP 221/01x also features EIDE interfaces (up to UDMA100) to the J5 connector and supports an onboard CompactFlash'/Microdrive' socket and an optional onboard 2.5in disk drive.

Other features provided are a PC real-time clock, floppy disk interface, two RS232 channels, two USB ports, parallel printer port, watchdog timer, keyboard/mouse interface, and a Silicon Motion SM722 graphics interface including DVI-D support.

To facilitate applications requiring rear I/O connections, the PP 221/01x uses the optional AD PP4/001 transition module.

The PP 221/01x supports many of today's leading operating systems, including Linux, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, VxWorks and QNX.

All of these operating systems support dual CPUs and the Xeon's hyper-threading capability.

LAN boot firmware is supported for blade applications.
