Dual-processor SBC improves performance

A Concurrent Technologies product story

The PP 402/04x uses the latest mobile dual core processors from the Intel embedded roadmap, ranging from the 1.5GHz to the 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Concurrent Technologies has released its latest dual-core processor 6U CompactPCI single board computer.

The PP 402/04x uses the latest mobile dual core processors from the Intel embedded roadmap, ranging from the 1.5GHz to the 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, giving an even greater improvement in measured performance/watt.

The board is ideal for low-power processing applications where the dual processor cores can access up to 4Gbyte of onboard DDR2 SDRAM.

The board also supports a 100MHz PCI-X PMC site (plus rear I/O), PICMG 2.16 Gigabit Ethernet and can operate in a system slot, peripheral slot or as a blade.

This combination of high-performance processing and a range of I/O interfaces ensures that the PP 402/04x is suitable for power-sensitive performance applications within the telecommunications, defence, security, telemetry, scientific and aerospace markets.

A range of extended temperature options is also available.

The PP 402/04x board supports the 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 processor (in a socket) or 1.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo L7400 processor (soldered), each with 4Mbyte L2 cache (shared between the cores), both processors support 64-bit operating systems.

By using appropriate operating systems and applications software, a computing performance increase of over twice an Intel Pentium M processor is achievable, and yet the Intel Thermal Design Power (TDP) for the 2.16GHz dual core processor is 34W versus 27W TDP for the single core 2.0GHz Intel Pentium M processor 760.

The Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset and Intel ICH7-M are used to complement the processor to achieve a low power, yet high-performance core design.

The chipset's memory controller can access 4Gbyte DDR2 667 dual channel SDRAM at up to 10.6Gbyte/s and 2 Gbyte soldered DDR2-667 single channel SDRAM at up to 5.3Gbyte/s.

A wide range of onboard I/O is available to the user: the board supports four 10/100/1000Mbit/s Ethernet interfaces (two front and two rear).

The front panel also supports a USB 2.0, two RS232, secondary analogue/digital graphics, keyboard and mouse interfaces.

As well as the PMC site rear I/O, the rear panel supports three USB 2.0, two RS-232, two SATA150, one EIDE, digital graphics, keyboard and mouse interfaces.

Other features included are a watchdog timer, long duration timer, LAN boot firmware and options for an onboard 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive and onboard CompactFlash EIDE storage.

For applications requiring rear I/O connections a rear transition module is also available.

The PP 402/04x family of boards support PICMG 2.16 (Gigabit Ethernet switched fabric), PICMG 2.9 (IPMI) and PICMG 2.1 (hot swap).

For ease of integration the boards support many of today's leading operating systems, including Linux, Windows XP Embedded, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Solaris, LynxOS, QNX and VxWorks.
