CDT and Luxell make a combined display
Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Luxell Technologies are to collaborate on displays combining CDT's LEP technology and Luxell's patented Black Layer technology.
Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Luxell Technologies are to collaborate on displays combining CDT's light emitting polymer technology (LEP) and Luxell's patented Black Layer technology for flat panel displays The agreement is the result of a joint evaluation by CDT and Luxell that successfully demonstrated that LEP displays integrated with the Black Layer technology provide enhanced contrast while preserving brightness, offering extended operating life for all colours, lower power consumption and the potential for simplified, lower cost manufacturing

The nature of one of the fundamental processes for light generation in light emitting polymer (LEP), materials has now been experimentally demonstrated by scientists from Cambridge and Oman.
Longer operating life for LEP displays
Cambridge Display Technology is claiming a dramatic improvement in the life performance of display devices based on light emitting polymer technology.
Under the terms of the agreement, CDT acquires exclusive marketing rights to sublicense Luxell's Black Layer technology for LEP flat panel displays and Luxell will receive, subject to specified conditions, licensing fees, production royalties and other payments.
"This strategic agreement further strengthens CDT's central role in the global commercialisation of LEPs", stated David Fyfe, CEO of CDT.
"Partnering with Luxell demonstrates our commitment to providing licensees with superior technological enhancements that facilitate the movement of LEPs into an ever-increasing number of end-user applications.

CDT is to supply customised formulations of Starck organic materials used in the manufacture of P-OLED displays.
It also allows CDT to build supplemental value into its industry-leading portfolio of LEP intellectual property and provides a clear path for licensees to manufacture full colour LEP displays in the near term." "The technical evaluation by CDT and resulting licensing agreement affirm the advantages of Luxell's Black Layer technology", stated Brian Kennedy, President and CEO of Luxell Technologies.
"Together, CDT and Luxell have arrived at a means to produce colour LEP displays with increased performance at decreased unit costs.
This business relationship is a significant catalyst for Luxell to advance the implementation of the Black Layer and gives all LEP manufacturers easy access through CDT, the global leader in LEP technologies".
Virtually all display applications require contrast enhancement for acceptable operation.
The higher the ambient light level and the more power sensitive the product, the more critical the need for such enhancement.
LEP displays, which are organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), comprise thin-film organic polymers that emit light when an electric current is applied.
The materials used in their construction can reflect ambient light, reducing contrast in room lighting and outdoor applications.
Black Layer technology has been successfully applied to organic and inorganic EL displays and can be readily integrated into the internal structure of FPDs with standard materials, tools and production processes.
Black Layer consists of two added layers deposited behind the light emitting layer that are optimised to phase shift incident light and reflect it back, effectively eliminating it.
In addition to providing superior contrast performance compared to conventional polarising films, Black Layer allows more display light to be emitted, reducing power consumption and increasing display life.
Also, Black Layer deposition tools are the same as those now utilised in standard display manufacturing and the materials used are standard low-cost deposition materials.
Furthermore, deposition times are consistent with high volume manufacturing demands.
