Licence to print displays

Cambridge Display Technology has granted a manufacturing licence to Dai Nippon Printing Co for the use of its LEP technology.

Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) has granted a manufacturing licence to Dai Nippon Printing Co (DNP) for the use of its LEP technology.

DNP is developing and plans to produce displays for graphics arts applications such as point-of-purchase and point-of-sale advertising.

CDT has licensed LEP technology to electronic display developers and manufacturers for a number of industry and consumer electronics markets.

The solution-processable nature of LEP materials makes them supremely adaptable for traditional printing methods, such as screen printing, contact, flexographic, and gravure printing.

This is expected to allow LEP devices to be one of the display technologies used in next generation electronic paper media.

David Fyfe, CEO of CDT, said: "We are excited that DNP has taken this licence.

They have a history of innovation in printing and information technologies, and are a leader in electronic paper applications.

With this licence LEP technology will expand to new, nontraditional display markets and will allow new manufacturing technologies to be developed for LEP deposition for printing large size flexible displays.

DNP has substantial experience through its packaging business in the creation of barrier films, a key to development of flexible LEP displays".

Along with the proprietary LEP technology of CDT, the pioneer company in the field, DNP display fabrication technology and information processing technology will bring-about an evolutionary era to the field of graphic arts.

The licence from CDT provides the requisite technology for DNP's LEP business development", said Takashi Toida, Director and General Manager of Research and Development Centre.

Examples of LEPs made by DNP were spotlighted in exhibits at the recent Tokyo International Book Fair 2003.

These include the area colour LEP displays with flashing text, which were applied to the posters and the promotional sash attached to the books.

LEP products will be marketed by DNP next year.
