This month, a leading researcher into eco-design and environmental management in electronics will present the findings of a DTI Global Watch mission to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Prof Martin Charter of The Surrey Institute of Art and Design University College co-ordinated the fact-finding trip, undertaken last November, to identify and learn from best practice and technological developments in the three countries.

He will present an overview of the mission's findings at the DTI Conference Centre in London on Tuesday 20th April.

Mission participants, including representatives from Fujitsu Services and Plextech, will also disseminate key outcomes at the "State of the art: eco-design and environmental management in the electronics sector in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan" event.

As Director of The Centre for Sustainable Design based at The Surrey Institute, Professor Charter was responsible for leading a group of UK technical experts as they explored green electronics products in the Far East - one of the world's leading centres for the production of home and office electronic products and household gadgets.

As the output of such products explodes, the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) are becoming increasingly important.

Two recent directives from the European Union, alongside legislation in the UK, mean that companies will need to make significant change to their product design and recycling practices.

The event on the 20th April will report on the experience and current eco-design capabilities of the Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong electronics sectors.

Guests will be able to discuss the mission and discover implications for the procurement and supply chain management programmes of UK electronics companies.
