Supercapacitors serve either as substitutes for or companions to Li-ion and other primary and rechargeable batteries, expanding their power and life expectancy.

A new series of small footprint supercapacitors for portable digital devices is now available from Cellergy, along with a low profile companion unit They feature low ESR (equivalent series resistance) and high capacitance, allowing delivery of unlimited high pulse currents, and enabling reduction of the voltage drop in battery-operated applications

Cellergy's supercapacitors serve either as substitutes for or companions to Li-ion and other primary and rechargeable batteries, expanding their power and life expectancy.

The primary applications are in digital and portable electronic appliances such as cameras, GPS systems, pagers and cellphones, or other uses calling for inexpensive high volume production, and requiring long operating life between recharges or replacements.

Because these new supercapacitors are produced using a patented electrochemical double layer screen printing technique, they are shapeable to the needs of the application, but the standard footprint is 17 x 17.5mm, with heights ranging from 2.4 to 5.3mm.

The low-profile model is the same width, 17.5mm, but somewhat longer at 28mm, and is only 1.9mm high.

Nominal voltages range from 2.1 to 12V, with ESR as low as 150mohm and capacitance from 7 to 40mF.

Leakage currents are as low as 4uA and as high as 8uA in the small footprint series and 12uA in the low profile.

Capacitance tolerance is from -20 to +80% and maximum surge voltage is 25%.

As portable electronic devices are routinely exposed to a wide range of temperatures, these Cellergy supercapacitors will operate at temperatures from -40 to +70C.

As temperatures change, ESR is increased, but within expected and allowable limits - 150% of nominal at +70C and 200% of nominal at -20C..

They are environmentally friendly, nontoxic, nonexplosive and RoHS compliant.
