Herga relies on miniature snap-action switches from Cherry to function to the highest levels of performance and reliability.

Celebrating 60 years as a leading independent manufacturer of switching and control systems for demanding markets such as medical, healthcare, automotive, industrial and packaging, Herga Electric has built an reputation for delivering efficient, effective and above all, reliable products This, in turn, means that the company requires components that are built to exacting standards of quality and performance

At its UK manufacturing headquarters in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, Herga produces a wide range of switching solutions including pressure switches, vacuum switches, footswitches, footpedals, differential switches, air bellows, air switches, fibre optic sensors, PCB switches, safety switches, safety mats, bumpers, infra-red remote control switches, pneumatic switches and pendant switches.

In its air switching systems, pressure and foot switches, for the last 25 years Herga has relied on miniature snap action switches from Cherry to function to the highest levels of performance and reliability.

Herga uses several standard products from Cherry's D4, DB and DC switch ranges as well as several bespoke offerings.

Cherry manufactures all the aforementioned products in Auerbach, Germany.

Being one of the few remaining volume manufacturers in Europe improves Cherry's responsiveness, flexibility and keeps product lead-times to a minimum.

Cherry's D4 snap switches are not only UL and VDE approved but also fulfil the requirements of IEC60335-1, making them suitable for appliance and white goods markets.

0.1 to 21A-rated switches are available as standard, and a wide range of contact configurations, terminal types, and actuators make Cherry capable of offering in excess of fifty thousand D4 switch variants alone.

Cherry's DB series subminiature switches suit an extremely broad range of customer needs.

PCB versions have optional plastic pins for side mounting or standoff tabs for upright mounting.

Auxiliary actuators are available separately, providing the engineer with greater flexibility during the early design stages.

DC devices are rated for currents up to 10A at 250V AC and waterproof and dustproof in accordance with IP67.

In addition to a wide variety of external snap-on actuators potted wire and high temperature (120C) versions are available.

Back in 1982 when Herga was looking for a world class provider of switching components to support its leading pressure and air sensing product manufacturing requirements, the company was looking to build a genuine partnership with key suppliers, an ethos that still remains, and which is also part of Cherry's culture.

The two companies worked closely together to ensure that Herga's need for highly repeatable, accurate performance could be achieved, and subsequently the relationship has grown into a genuine partnership.

The principal design input from Herga has been led by Quality Manager Ken Wiggins, ably supported in the supply chain by Purchasing Manager Guy Trezise.

Overseeing all aspects was Richard Chatham, Herga's Managing Director.

Most recently, the co-operation between the two companies has grown even stronger.

Herga's latest air switch product is now produced to the company's demanding specifications at Cherry's state-of-the-art facility in Klasterec, in the Czech Republic.

As both Herga and Cherry are ISO approved (the Klasterec facility is ISO9001:2000, ISO14001:2004 and ISO/TS16949), this has been achieved with a minimum of fuss and quality levels have been maintained at the highest level.

As Cherry's General Manager, Michael Groom comments: "Cherry's now Vice President of Sales, Nigel Ball established a business relationship with Herga 25 years ago".

"Cherry always sets out to establish a partnership with its customers to ultimately provide that little extra; Cherry is able to produce a variety of customer specific applications cost effectively at any one of several manufacturing sites throughout Central and Eastern Europe, South America and Asia".

"The business relationship with Herga is one just example of where Cherry has become more than simply a component supplier, something we continue to strive for across all our client base and product portfolio".

"We look forward to developing the business relationship with Herga further and to a further 25 years trading".
