Conductive plastics provide lightweight shielding
New from Chomerics is the Premier range of conductive plastic shielding materials.
New from Chomerics is the Premier range of conductive plastic shielding materials.
The materials consist of nickel-plated carbon fibres integrated into an injection moulded thermoplastic resin.
Specifically developed for high performance EMI shielding and grounding applications, Premier shields give weight, cost and space savings as well as greater design freedom compared with metal cans and existing shielded plastic housings.
A proprietary process is used to achieve the dense dispersion of randomly orientated, fully engaged long fibres of nickel-plated carbon.
This maximises the shielding, reflection and absorption performance of the moulded part.
The process avoids problems associated with traditional dry blending and short fibre compounding such as fibre breakdown and inconsistent dispersion.
Premier plastic shielding solutions use either tough PC/ABS or PA (nylon 6,6) base resins that can be moulded with sections as thin as 0.8mm, giving an exceptional strength to weight ratio.
Complex features and geometries that are often required in compact modern equipment can easily be incorporated in the design.
Having the shielding functionality integrated into a moulded part means that significant cost and process savings can be made; the need for supplementary processes such as plating, painting and vacuum coating are alleviated.
The inclusion of design features such as internal compartments means that a single Premier part can handle multiple logic and RF components in a single shield.
This helps to further reduce the shielding solution cost and ease assembly.
In many applications satisfactory performance can be achieved by grounding the Premier shield directly onto a PCB trace.
For applications that require a conformable dispensed or moulded gasket interface, Premier shields are fully compatible with the Chomerics range of form-in-place and moulded gasket materials.
Chomerics is able to supply Premier conductive plastics as a complete solution incorporating, where required, the manufacture and assembly of additional gasket and inserts.
The design of each part is carefully addressed to optimise all round performance and cost.
In-house functional testing helps to ensure that prototypes work first time therefore shortening customer test requirements and reducing the overall design cycle.
