Chomerics has enhanced and redefined its range of Premier conductive plastic shielding materials.

Chomerics has enhanced and redefined its range of Premier conductive plastic shielding materials The increased choice means that engineers can choose the material that accurately matches the shielding and mechanical requirements of their application, therefore avoiding overdesign and unnecessary cost

Premier shields give weight, cost and space savings as well as greater design freedom and improved strength compared with most other existing shielding applications and other existing shielding approaches.

Designs with wall thicknesses down to 0.8mm can be achieved using the abrasion and corrosion resistant materials.

By having its shielding functionality integrated, the need for costly supplementary processes such as plating and painting are alleviated.

HT versions of Premier are suitable for continuous use at 85C with short-term excursions to 100C.

The ST derivative meanwhile is suited to more demanding applications and has a continuous operating temperature of up to 105C and short-term capability to 115C.

Both HT and ST versions are available in a choice of three compounds that give increasing levels of shielding performance.

Basic performance is given by A220 material, A230 delivers intermediate shielding, whilst for the most demanding applications, A240 offers up to 85dB attenuation.

The mechanical performance of the various Premier materials is also different, with higher shielding performance versions being stiffer (having a higher modulus) than lower attenuation variants.Premier plastic shielding materials use a blend of polycarbonate and ABS engineered for stable electrical, mechanical and physical performance.

Using a proprietary process the base material is filled with long fibres of nickel-plated carbon; the process ensures dense dispersion, random orientation and full engagement of the fibres to give optimum shielding performance.

The inclusion of design features such as internal compartments means that a single Premier part can accommodate multiple logic and RF components in a single shield.

This helps to further reduce the shielding solution cost and eases assembly.

In many applications satisfactory performance can be achieved by grounding a Premier shield directly onto a PCB trace.

For applications that require a conformable dispensed or moulded gasket interface, the shields are fully compatible with the Chomerics range of form-in-place and moulded gasket materials.
