Cambridge Positioning Systems (CPS) and SingTel Mobile have ground-breaking plans to bring the benefits of high accuracy mobile location services and technology to Singapore and Asia It promises to be the most comprehensive technology trial for location-based services and solutions in the Asian region to date

The two companies, supported by the Singapore government's InfoComm Development Authority Of Singapore (IDA), are to build a test network around Tampines Town as a platform for application and hardware developers to trial new location-enabled solutions.

Whilst SingTel Mobile already provides cell-ID based location information services on its GSM network, it has chosen to work closely with the Cambridge-based company because of CPS' more accurate solution between 50 and 100m.

The enhanced observed time difference (EOTD) method of location determination, which was pioneered by CPS, is widely regarded as the most viable solution for GSM operators around the world.

Tampines Town has been selected because of its mix of business, residential and retail area.

It provides an ideal environment for application developers to trial a wide range of location-based solutions, including safety, "buddy-finder" and m-commerce services.

SingTel Mobile and CPS staff will co-operate in the installation of the E-OTD solution into the local mobile infrastructure for the trial, which is expected to start operations by late March 2002.

As part of the trial, operators and users will get to handle special location-enabled handsets which will be provided by a number of leading manufacturers.

SingTel's Vice President of Consumer Products Hui Weng Cheong said: "SingTel Mobile was the first operator to introduce location based services in Singapore in March 2001.

Today, our customers can get information on nearby locations of public amenities such as automated teller machines, petrol stations, fast food restaurants and even lottery kiosks on their mobile phones.

Our aim is to offer them even more accurate location information about these places that are within walking distance".

CPS Chief Executive Chris Wade said: "We are delighted to be playing our part in such an important exercise in a country that prides itself on technological innovation.

This affords application developers the opportunity to work with both SingTel and ourselves to trial some of the new and exciting services in a live network.

"The encouragement and participation from the Singapore government is a critical enabler for this project.

It is an excellent example of how public and private can work together for the benefit of the communications industry and its customers.

For CPS, this is a significant opportunity in one of the largest and most advanced mobile communications communities in the world.

Our E-OTD solution is now the location technology of choice for GSM operators globally.

This development marks a significant step forward for us into a new and rapidly expanding market".
