Expansion for high-accuracy location products
Cambridge Positioning Systems is to expand its range of high-accuracy location products for 3G networks to meet growing demand from operators and equipment vendors for industry standardised solutions.
Cambridge Positioning Systems (CPS) is to expand its range of high-accuracy location products for 3G networks to meet growing demand from operators and equipment vendors for industry standardised solutions.
The move will provide operators with a seamless and simple migration path from 2G to 3G based on standardised cost-effective and proven location technology.
Location-based services are seen as a key driver for 3G service development and takeup - with users able to pinpoint their location to sub-20m accuracy.
The current location standard for 3G - OTDOA (Observed Time Difference of Arrival) - is now being widely adopted by vendors seeking to capitalise on this growing market.
Building on its expertise in the development of low-cost high-accuracy location solutions for GSM, CPS is now extending its offering by delivering improved performance for standardised OTDOA location technology.
These include: a development of its proven E-OTD terminal software specifically for OTDOA implementation and integration into handsets and other wireless devices; a new development of its Cursor "building block" for the network-based SMLC (serving mobile location centre) - the software which calculates handset location - for OTDOA; and a novel offering for UMTS, CDMA2000 and the emerging TD-SCDMA technologies.
CPS can offer tailored and flexible solutions for a range of GSM and W-CDMA networks, according to CPS Chief Executive Chris Wade, who said: "The market is demanding flexible, cost-effective and above all standardised solutions for 3G deployment.
Our extensive track record in developing the GSM high accuracy location standard - plus practical 3G experience - gives us a unique perspective on current and future industry needs and trends".
"By offering a full range of OTDOA solutions now we can help our customers deliver the products that will drive the market for profitable high accuracy location services.
The levels of interest expressed by the industry in our cost-effective solution are growing rapidly - particularly in dual-mode offerings to manage the transition from 2G to 3G".
CPS already delivers its standard E-OTD solution to network equipment vendors Ericsson, Siemens and Nortel Networks and many handset vendors including Samsung and chipset vendors Intel and Texas Instruments.
