CMC Electronics Cincinnati has been selected as a team member supporting and protecting America's premier F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

CMC Electronics Cincinnati has been selected by Northrop Grumman Corporation's Electronic Systems sector as a team member supporting and protecting America's premier F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft CMC will provide megapixel infra-red detector assemblies (IDAs) used in the electro-optical distributed aperture system (EO DAS) suite of six sensors, which will give a 24-hour, all-weather, all-aspect imaging capability

The suite provides full spherical coverage around the aircraft for missile threat warning, navigation and situational awareness.

An additional IDA will be used in the electro optical targeting system (EOTS) pod in many of the aircraft.

Approximately 2600 F-35s are planned for US and UK military forces (Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy).

Each service has a version developed specifically for its role - a carrier version for the Navy, a short-takeoff/vertical-landing variant for the Marines and UK services, and the conventional-takeoff-and-landing version for the Air Force.

An almost equal number could be built for international customers.

Eight partner countries, including the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Australia have joined the F-35 JSF programme at various levels of investment.

With as many as 6000 combined domestic and international aircraft, and six or more IDAs per aircraft, there is an expected demand for over 36,000 sensors for the F-35 JSF programme.

This would make the F-35 the single largest electro-optical/infra-red (EO/IR) contract in history.

Deliveries start next year and will continue for over 20 years.

Dr James T Wimmers, President and CEO, CMC Electronics Cincinnati, stated: "CMC's prior efforts with Northrop Grumman to provide megapixel detectors for proof of concept for the F-35, added to our reputation for delivering leading-edge technology.

CMC has been working with Northrop Grumman for many years on a number of advanced infrared missile seeker programs.

We have demonstrated our capability to work as an integrated product team member, ensuring that the overall program goals are achieved".

Dr Wimmers added: "This programme will be completed in our Cincinnati, Ohio facility.

Our ISO9001 registered facility and extensive detector fabrication laboratories provide a fertile environment for the innovative engineering embodied in this latest design".
