Concoat has developed the world's first environment-friendly water-based conformal coating to achieve MIL-spec qualification: the most stringent global verification of performance that any coating material can achieve Concoat's Humiseal 1H20 AR2 conformal coating is the first ever water-based coating material to attain the performance standards required to earn the prestigious US Department of Defence MIL-spec qualification

Awarding the status, the MIL-spec laboratory inspector told Concoat MD Graham Naisbitt: "We are glad to inform you that your conformal coating Humiseal 1H20AR2 met all the requirements of MIL-I-46058 Qualification Inspection.

Congratulations to you and your company for the excellent job you have done".

This represents a huge breakthrough in conformal coatings materials science.

It will also dramatically accelerate the worldwide adoption of greener water-based conformal coating types which up until now have been unable to meet the extremely high humidity resistance requirements required of MIL-spec qualification.

"The independently conducted MIL-spec qualification process is the most widely recognised and rigorous test verification protocol to which any conformal coating can be subjected", explains Naisbitt.

"As such it includes exposing a candidate material for prolonged periods to high temperature and humidity environments: the prime cause of failure in 90% of coating materials rejected for MIL-spec qualification".

The MIL-spec qualification was originally developed in the 1960s to guarantee the performance of conformal coating materials that were destined for use in ultra high reliability aerospace and military applications.

It has since become widely adopted as the reference coating materials standard in many other safety critical industries such as automotive electronics.

"To develop a water-based coating material that is kept in liquid by a water carrier medium, but which is subsequently required to resist high levels of humidity and condensation to MIL-spec qualification, was a massive technological challenge", continues Naisbitt.

"But with Humiseal 1H20 AR2 we have cracked the problem and have paved the way to follow the environmental drive in other industries - such as paint and surface finish - whereby water is used to replace solvent as the carrier medium".

This technological breakthrough also means Concoat and Humiseal are the only suppliers in the world to offer both MIL-spec qualified and UL-approved (US equivalent of CE-marking and mandatory for any product sold in North America) water-based conformal coatings within their product ranges.

It also builds on their incomparable history of "world first" pioneering achievements in the conformal coatings field.

Examples include being the world's first companies to: develop acrylic-based conformal coating materials in 1976; UV-curable materials in 1986; a UL-approved water-based coating in 1985; and solventless silicone-based materials in 1988.

"We are now planning to submit another water-based coating in the Concoat Humiseal range - the polyurethane-based 1H20 UR3 material - for MIL-spec qualification testing and UL-approval within the next 3 months", adds Naisbitt.

"Likewise 1H20 AR2 will also now be submitted for UL-approval as well".
