Production automation system specialist, Contax is launching the C5 range of placement systems on its stand G214 at Nepcon 2005 Available in two models, C5 and C5d, the range is ideally suited to a high mix production environment

A highly intelligent system, the C5 offers exceptional throughput and flexibility using the latest technology.

It is very easy to program and job changeover is fast and efficient.

The systems operate at speeds of up to 22,000 components per hour, with four spindle heads accurately placing a wide variety of components ranging from 0201 chips to 75mm square or 100 x 50mm rectangular.

The C5 uses an intelligent feeding system, and can accommodate up to 192 8mm electronic tape feeders together with 10 Jedec trays.

Having "hot swap" feeders ensures the next job can be prepared and loaded whilst the current one is running, so making changeover instantaneous and maximising throughput.

The C5/C5d offers the highest levels of accuracy.

All components are automatically measured and aligned using the latest Cognex vision system.

The camera is centrally positioned for "fly by centring" with backlighting providing a high contrast silhouette to avoid reflection.

For BGA, micro-BGA and flip chips, an additional front illumination is available.

The Model C5d top of the range system offers dual beams, so while one head is picking components, the other will be placing, so ensuring virtually nonstop production.

It also has the higher 22,000 components per hour speed, with 128 feeders and 16 Jedec trays, so making it ideal for larger batch sizes.

The Model C5 is more suited to medium sized batches with frequent job changeovers.

It is a single beam and single head machine with 192 feeders and 10 Jedec trays at a top speed of 11,250 components per hour.

Both models have a host of other features including: server database for inventory control, automatic calibration, a compact 991 x 2184mm footprint, maintenance free linear motors, optional component traceability, offline programming, component inventory and production reports, touch screen monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse.

"The C5 range offers an outstanding price/performance ratio", explained Jan O'Connor, Managing Director at Contax.

"With the C5 the user is looking at measuring throughput rather than just machine speed".

"In addition to offering very fast operating speeds of up to 22,000 components per hour, both models have high feeder capacities, so allowing the user to load one job whilst another is running".

"This results in virtually continuous production, and outstandingly fast throughput".

"The C5/C5d is a highly flexible and sophisticated pick and place system at a realistic price, and will suit any manufacturer requiring fast job changeovers", he said.
