Contract electronics manufacturer DVR has purchased the UK's first high performance portable PCB inspection system.

As part of a recent expansion programme, contract electronics manufacturer DVR has purchased the UK's first high performance portable PCB inspection system, the Omron VT-RNS-ptH from Contax DVR estimates that the time savings resulting from this new AOI system could increase its production output by around 50%

Furthermore, it will help provide the necessary infrastructure for lead-free manufacture.

The new Omron VT-RNS-ptH is the first benchtop system available to offer true analysis rather than pattern recognition as the basis for its inspection.

This is important for lead-free production.

Using its colour highlight system, LEDs emit coloured light and information is extracted through chromaticity.

This ensures that inspections are not affected by fluctuations in the brightness of the surface of the solder, as can happen with lead-free paste.

DVR selected the Omron VT-RNS-ptH after careful consideration and extensive research.

Explained David Hellings, Sales Director at DVR: "Our business has been growing considerably and we needed to invest in further equipment to cope with the increased demand".

He continued: "This also proved a good opportunity to make further improvements to our production".

"As a contract manufacturer, customer service is crucial".

"So we wanted to improve our product quality and reliability, whilst increasing production speed and output".

"Finally, we needed to ensure that we were fully lead-free compatible to comply with forthcoming regulations".

After analysis, Hellings recognised that a suitable AOI system was critical to their improvement process.

He said: "We had identified a bottleneck with manual inspection, as we were performing 200% visual inspection".

"This involved an operator examining each circuit for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then repeating the task".

"A suitable AOI system could cut down this time drastically".

DVR required a benchtop unit because of space restrictions and started researching the marketplace accordingly.

However, after looking at a number of options none of the systems appeared suitable.

Hellings explained: "We needed an AOI to offer character recognition and measure the solder paste rather than just match it against a picture".

"Basically, we were looking for intelligence in a system rather than one that relies on image comparison".

"At first, none of the systems investigated could meet all our criteria".

"Then we spoke to Contax, who told us that Omron were bringing out a new benchtop version of the VT-RNS".

"We now have the system in place and it is perfect for our requirements".

"Better still, our investment will pay for itself".

"We now have the capacity for a 50% increase in workload and it has saved us employing more staff".

"What would previously have taken 4 man days, we can potentially do in one day".

"Contax have been great".

"They always kept us informed and their staff have been very good".

"They have a good sales approach that is backed up by knowledgeable and efficient, technical help".

"We would definitely recommend them to others", he concluded.
