Web-based search simplifies MCU specification
Computer Solutions describes Micro-Search as the definitive, unbiased and free web-based selection guide for the 8051 family of microcontrollers.
The development tools make use of the processor's MON08 on-chip monitor, which links to the outside world via two of the chip's pins and which allows developers to test programs and to program those chips containing Flash memory or EEPROM.
The MON08 Multilink interface cable uses a PC's parallel port to control the target HC08 processor.
It provides 2-5V DC power to the processor, allowing automatic power-up sequencing of the target system.
It also possesses an auto-baud feature, which samples the target frequency and sets the proper communications rate.
The Cyclone interface can act as a debugger and stand-alone programmer or can be linked to a PC running software which will provide automated programming of the target.
The 68HC908 evaluation board is available for the 68HC908AB23, AS60 or AZ60 versions of the microcontroller, and provides a MON08 connection and all the components needed to power up the board under MON08 control.
The board includes an RS232 driver, a crystal oscillator circuit and enough pull-up resistors to configure the chip for immediate debugging.
The bus is completely free, allowing the user to start the chip up in any mode.
Wire-wrap headers are also included.
Free software is available for assembly, simulation, debugging and flash programming as well as a fully featured free C compiler only limited to 4Kbyte of code.
An enhanced software package is available that includes an editor providing full project support and C source code highlighting, an assembler which handles multiple segments with powerful macros and conditionals, a debugger supporting high-level C linkage, and a Flash programmer for batch programming.
