Supercapacitors combine the best of both worlds
The PowerStor P Series of low ESR 5V aerogel supercapacitors aims to combine the best features of high-energy rechargeable batteries and high-power electrolytic capacitors.
With values ranging from 0.1 to 1.0F, the PowerStor P Series of low ESR 5V aerogel supercapacitors from Cooper Electronic Technologies combines the best features of high-energy rechargeable batteries and high-power electrolytic capacitors.
Two types are available, the low-ESR high-power PA Series with ESR values ranging from 0.15 to 0.2ohm, and the higher-energy-density PB Series with ESR values ranging from 0.5 to 6ohm.
Both the PA and PB Series are available with vertical or horizontal leads.
Historically, low-capacitance 5V coin-shaped supercapacitors have been used for low-drain-rate memory-backup applications.
These supercapacitors typically have equivalent series resistance (ESR) values in the tens to hundreds of ohms, limiting the application of these devices to memory backup only.
Hold-up applications requiring a short high-current pulse prior to low-current memory backup mode are ideally suited to the new P Series.
During the short high-current pulse, standard coin shaped supercapacitors cannot hold up the voltage and subsequently the microprocessor, memory, or real time clock will shut down.
With low ESR and high capacitance, PowerStor's P Series has a minimal voltage drop during the current pulse and provides maximum memory backup time during the lower-current sleep mode.
