Development kit speeds interactive applications
Mercator is the first 'out-of-the-box' MHEG-5 development kit to help set-top box and interactive digital TV manufacturers keep pace with the fast-evolving UK MHEG-5 digital standard.
Dr Vassilis Seferidis, Toshiba's European Business Strategist explained that the company was looking for a long-term partner to support the development of its digital television products: "We see interactive data services as a key differentiating factor to the success of our DTV products and we were looking for a solution which could add-value to our product development strategy.
Cabot's Mercator MHEG-5 engine offers superior performance and a robust integration environment partly due to its wide deployment in the UK market.
In the last few months during the porting of the MHEG-5 engine to Toshiba's DTV platform we were also impressed with the ease of integration it affords, and Cabot's support and in-house DTV skills.
We are confident that Cabot's MHEG-5 technology will allow us to develop high-performance interactive applications, which will enhance the competitiveness of our products in the marketplace".
Alp Somyurek, Deputy Managing Director of Cabot Communications added: "We are obviously delighted to win this contract.
We look forward to establishing a long-term partnership with Toshiba, based on a high level of engineering co-operation to ensure a compelling customer offering".
The Mercator MHEG-5 engine has been adopted by 11 manufacturers and is currently deployed in 40% of the 200,000 FreeView receivers shipped monthly in the UK.
It offers a complete software development kit (SDK) for implementing a consumer-ready MHEG-5 implementation onto a set-top box, integrated digital TV or PC-TV card.
Mercator is available for most CPU architectures and includes the CHIL (Cabot high level interface) API for platform independence.
