Toshiba chooses engine for interative digital TV
Toshiba Information Systems UK has selected the Mercator MHEG-5 engine to develop interactive services for its next generation of digital terrestrial TV receivers.
Vestel, which already has a 10% share of the IDTV market in the UK, plans to build on this position in 2003 and will also launch the IDTV range in other European countries in 2004.
The new generation IDTV products will go on sale under the Goodmans and Bush brands in the UK, in Q4 2003 Cabot's digital TV suite includes the Eclipse DVB middleware solution, Mercator, the UK MHEG-5 engine and the Callisto over-air-download (OAD) module, which supports the UK proprietary standard, as well as the new SSU European standard.
Unlike other DVB software stacks, Eclipse is capable of handling the complex interaction between the analogue TV chassis and digital TV modules and provides the mandatory common interface slot support, allowing IDTV manufacturers to save months of product development time.

Software is key to Philips reference design
Philips and Cabot Communications have developed a complete integrated reference design for iDTVs and digital STBs, enabling analogue TV manufacturers to quickly enter the emerging DTV market.
Turan Erdogan, a Board Director at Vestel says the Cabot software will speed up time-to-market and, allow Vestel to easily customise the user interface for individual OEM customers to support rapid roll-out of its latest generation products: "As Europe's leading consumer electronics manufacturer, we are committed to providing our customers with exceptional products.
We are well-placed to take advantage of the growing market for IDTVs and are expecting to achieve significant sales of these products in 2004.
We selected Cabot's software because it offers several unbeatable advantages: it is the only pan-European solution on the market, the only software stack capable of handling the complex interaction between the analogue TV chassis and digital TV modules and the only middleware solution to offer a completely customisable user interface.
All of these benefits will give us a real strategic advantage in a rapidly growing market and a great proposition for our OEM customers".
Cabot is already contracted with 16 major companies including Daewoo, Humax, Pioneer, Philips and Toshiba with its digital TV software suite deployed in around 500,000 digital set top box receivers.
Managing Director Keith Potter commented: "We expect the IDTV market to take-off in 2004 as households across Europe replace existing TVs to access free-to-air digital services.
We are happy to work with Vestel, the largest OEM manufacturer in Europe and help make this transition into the UK digital terrestrial market a seamless experience for both Vestel and its customers.
We will play a key role by helping IDTV manufacturers bring high-quality product to market at an attractive price.
We are continuously developing our software and we intend to do for IDTVs what we did for Freeview digital set-top boxes".
