DTV middleware stack covers all European markets
Aurora is billed as the first complete, turnkey open standards-based DVB middleware stack for free-to-air digital terrestrial and satellite receivers.
Middleware makes more of digital video recorder
Vestel has developed a new generic digital video recorder using Cabot's Aurora middleware stack and ST Microelectronics' new 5100 MPEG2 decoder.
Cabot and Instrata are also working in partnership to develop customisable UI designs for digital video recorders (DVRs), which will be incorporated into Aurora Solutions, Cabot's optimised, flexible DVB middleware stack for combination digital TV devices.
This will enable manufacturers of DVRs to enable viewers to easily explore exciting features such as recording TV programmes from the electronic programme guide and pausing and rewinding live TV.
"UIs are becoming an important feature of digital TV devices, as viewers spend more time interacting with the on-screen display to make best use of viewing and recording features", said Giri Valliappan, Technical Marketing Manager at Cabot Communications.
"The new UIs will integrate fully into our Aurora Solutions portfolio of digital TV middleware so set top box and DVR manufacturers can benefit from optimised, flexible DVB software offering intuitive UIs that are easy to customise to reflect a brand identity".
Rachel Jones, Director at Instrata added: "Set top boxes and TVs are often situated in a central place in people's homes and watched for many hours of the day".
"It is critical to ensure that the interfaces to these devices are clearly laid out and easy to read, as well as pleasing to look at".
"Working with Cabot, we've put together some visually appealing new interface designs that afford this important role and complement the aesthetics of their setting".
Manufacturers using Aurora to build digital TV devices can use Cabot's Observatory PC Development Studio to customise and test the UIs quickly and easily in a PC-based Windows implementation of the Aurora stack.
Cabot is currently showcasing a range of set top boxes and DVRs built on the Aurora stack and using the latest UI designs at IBC 2005, on Stand 1.130.
