DC solid-state relay delivers high voltage rating

The SSC Series of DC solid-state relays is based on IGBT technology and is capable of operating at voltages up to 800 or 1000V.

The SSC is the first SSR from Crydom to offer such a high DC voltage rating.

It offers a cost effective contactless switching solution for use in high-voltage applications such as DC brake circuits in motor-driven traction equipment.

The high voltages generated by DC inductive loads make electromechanical switches vulnerable to contact wear resulting from arcing.

This creates a need for overvoltage suppression, increasing component count, design and production time.

The new high voltage SSC solid-state relay offers designers a contactless alternative with a virtually limitless life, often requiring no additional overvoltage suppression.

"A cost effective and more reliable option to equivalent electro-mechanical contactors, the new relay will prove highly beneficial in a wide range of applications where shock, vibration and lifetime are a challenge, such as trains, transit systems, lift equipment and heavy automation machinery", comments Bruce McEachran, Technical Manager, Crydom International.

The relays can switch DC loads of up to 25A and with a surge current capability of 75A DC they are well suited to inductive loads and associated inrush currents.

The series allows higher voltage loads to be switched more rapidly.

The devices can be driven from a wide range of voltages making them compatible with many different control systems.
